Plastic beads on Mars: Rise and fall of a prank

Xavier Jenks (Domatron Graves)

A picture from NASA's Curiosity rover was retouched for a spoof website to look as if Mardi Gras beads were lying on the Martian surface. The whitish-gray object visible in the center of the picture is an actual scrap of plastic that came from Curiosity and was spotted on the ground.

By Alan Boyle

For a while, it almost looked as if NASA was really spilling the beans?? or rather, the beads?? about the Curiosity rover's hush-hush discoveries on Mars. And that was precisely the problem.

A spoof website, NASAUpdateCenter.us, made a splash on Thursday by proclaiming that Curiosity discovered "small spheres" that turned out to be made of plastic. The purported press release drew heavily on the logos and page design used by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and was accompanied by a picture showing strings of the tiny spheres ??which looked suspiciously like Mardi Gras necklaces.

Curiosity's science team is scheduled to provide an eagerly awaited update on the rover mission at an American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco on Monday. Some of the initial news reports?suggested the scientists were getting ready to announce a discovery that would be "one for the history books." (On Thursday, NASA said such "rumors and speculation" were incorrect.)

"I basically thought that with all the hype NASA made last week about an earthshaking release, we could build off that hype and set off the story before them," Domatron Graves, a.k.a. Xavier Jenks, explained in an email. Graves, who told me he's a 25-year-old Mardi Gras production artist and "publicity stuntman" from New Orleans, was the prime mover behind the "plastic beads" prank.

The website was meant as a joke, and as a sly marketing campaign for Graves' Mardi Gras team, the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus. Hence the plastic beads. One of the pages on the site even featured a "Face on Mars" picture that morphed into the furry visage of Chewbacca from the Star Wars saga.

The way Graves tells the story, NASA wasn't amused. He said he received a phone call from someone claiming to be from JPL, informing him that his use of the space agency's logos was a federal offense. Graves and his Web team had the bogus "press release" taken down by 1 p.m. ET today.

"I'm trying not to go to jail," he told me over the phone.

I haven't yet been able to track down exactly who spoke with him. Bert Ulrich, who serves as a multimedia liaison at NASA Headquarters in Washington, told me he wasn't aware that anyone from the agency contacted Graves. "It's news to us," he wrote in an email.

There is a law on the books that forbids the unauthorized use of NASA's official logos and program identifiers (14 CFR 1221), backed up by the threat of a six-month jail term (18 USC 701). But it's unlikely that NASA would actually pursue prosecution ??and even if the agency did prosecute, you could argue that Graves and his pals would be protected by policies governing fair use and parody. In any case, that argument is now moot.

One of the issues might have been that the look and feel of the fake press release was so serious, even though the claim was clearly ridiculous. Real names were used in the wrong contexts, and the claims were couched in terms typically used to describe Mars' truly weird blueberries. It'd take a sharp observer (like Bad Astronomy's?Phil Plait) to see right away that the whole thing was baloney.

The full text of the bogus press release has been taken down, but you can get a sense of the tone from this screenshot:

Xavier Jenks (Domatron Graves)

This is not a NASA news release, but because of the way it was presented on a spoof website, some people thought it actually came from NASA.

NASA is one of the more trusted agencies in the federal government, although surveys suggest that trust has fallen in recent years. The hubbub over Martian discoveries is particularly sensitive, in light of the misunderstandings surrounding what Curiosity has or has not found so far. So it's understandable that the space agency might not appreciate a spoof that gave the wrong impression?? as opposed to a spoof like the "We're NASA and We Know It" viral video, which celebrates the Curiosity mission's true accomplishments.

If Graves had been able to hold out a little bit longer, he would have added some references to the Mardi Gras krewe's home page ? to signal that the website was a spoof and generate a little online traffic for Chewbacchus. That's what he did in the case of the New Orleans Bigfoot Society, another prank website that he and his friends cooked up last year. But after the hurried removal of the faux NASA Web pages, the spoof website has been reduced to a text-only page with a Web link paying tribute to "the Sacred Drunken Wookiee!"

Let's just hope Lucasfilm doesn't go after Graves for copyright infringement. NASA's displeasure is nothing, compared to the wrath of the "Star Wars" empire.

More whimsy about the Curiosity rover on Mars:

Graves acknowledges that the "Domatron" in his name is a nom d'art, but he insists that the last name is real. "I'm a Graves," he told me. I found his contact information by tracing the domain-registration listing for NASAUpdateCenter.us, and reached him by phone just as he was arranging for the faux press release to be taken down. I've revised this posting slightly to delve into the questions surrounding the warning that Graves said he received.?

Device harvests energy from train tracks

17 hrs.

There are more than 140,000 miles of train track in the U.S., many of them laid across lonely stretches of land with nary a power line in sight. Thankfully, there?s a new gadget to harvest energy from vibrations generated in the track by passing trains to power signal lights and other track-side devices.

The energy harvester could save more than $10 million in trackside power costs in New York state alone, according to its inventor, Stony Brook University professor of mechanical engineering Lei Zuo. It would also reduce carbon dioxide emissions there by about 3,000 tons, he added.

The device converts the irregular up-and-down vibration of a train track to a unidirectional rotation of a generator. The concept is similar to other energy-harvesting devices such as the energy-generating backpack, kneebrace, speed bump?and pavers.?

The global market for energy harvesters hit $700 million in 2011 and could pass $4 billion by 2021, according to market research firm IDTechEx. Zuo and colleagues have licensed their Mechanical Motion Rectifier-based Railroad Energy Harvester to Electric Truck/Harvest NRG for commercialization.

Caltech and UVic Set 339Gbps Internet Speed Record

I was taking a more general application of "what's the point?" The first connection to what would become the Internet was made between UCLA and SRI in Menlo Park, CA after all. That was a big deal for them, but a bigger deal for us. What the point of that was is rather subjective.

100PB seems like a lot of data today - 3,000 times the 3TB storage available in a standard PC. But I am so old I wear an onion on my belt, as was the fashion in my day. 1/3000th of that 3TB is 1GB. I can remember when to have 1GB of storage in your PC was an undreamt of wealth of storage richness: a bottomless well that might never be filled. Hell, I can remember a day when 3TB of digital info storage was more storage than there was - everywhere on Earth. In fact in my early days there was talk of a terabyte being the sum of human knowledge (silly, I know). It's reasonable to expect that when that much more time has passed again, 100PB will not be a big deal either.

So now we carry around a 1TB 2.5" USB drive in our shirt pocket like it's no big deal. And when guys like this do things like this we talk about what it means to them - and that's fine. But there is a larger story, like there was a larger story at UCLA - and that is "what does this mean to the rest of us?"

Now 339Gbps isn't such a big deal. NEC wizards have already passed 101 Tbps - 300 times as much over a single fiber [wikipedia.org], though not to this distance. That's enough bandwidth to pass your 100PB in 20 minutes, over a single strand of glass fiber.

The LA Metro area is about 15 million people, or 3 million homes. To deliver 1Gbps to a reasonable half of 3 million homes and mesh it out for global distribution is going to require a lot of these links. The aggregate demand would probably be under 1% of peak potential of 3,000 Tbps or about 30Tbps. 100 times the bandwidth of this link. Using CDNs(*) - particularly for YouTube, CableTV, the usual porn suspects and BitTorrent you could diminish the need for wider bandwidth considerably but you still need a wide pipe to the outside world. And all the Internet servers in the world would need to be updated to support the crushing demand with higher performance, SSD storage and the like. And that's great for the economy, and it's just LA.

These innovations are neat, but they're neater still when they come home to all of us.

TL;DR: Get off my lawn.

/(*) Define CDN: A CDN, or Content Delivery Network [wikipedia.org] is a facility for moving high bandwidth, high demand or high transaction content closer to a nexus of consumers. An example would be Netflix, which delivers streaming video content to 21 million subscribers, comprising by some estimates a full third of Internet traffic. Netflix provides for free to Internet providers BackBlaze boxes [gigaom.com] that move Netflix content closer to the end user, reducing backbone usage. Similar boxes are provided by advertising networks and other content providers.

China's doesn't get the joke about North Korean dictator

?(AP) ? The online version of China's Communist Party newspaper has hailed a report by The Onion naming North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un as the "Sexiest Man Alive" ? apparently unaware it is satire.

The People's Daily ran a 55-page photo spread on its website Tuesday in a tribute to the round-faced leader, under the headline "North Korea's top leader named The Onion's Sexiest Man Alive for 2012."

Quoting The Onion's spoof report, the Chinese newspaper wrote, "With his devastatingly handsome, round face, his boyish charm, and his strong, sturdy frame, this Pyongyang-bred heartthrob is every woman's dream come true."

"Blessed with an air of power that masks an unmistakable cute, cuddly side, Kim made this newspaper's editorial board swoon with his impeccable fashion sense, chic short hairstyle, and, of course, that famous smile," the People's Daily cited The Onion as saying.

The photos the People's Daily selected include Kim on horseback squinting into the light and Kim waving toward a military parade. In other photos, he is wearing sunglasses and smiling, or touring a facility with his wife.

An online editor for the People's Daily said Wednesday that the photo spread would be taken offline.

"We have realized it is satirical," said the editor who works on the site's South Korea channel, one of the three channels where it was posted. He refused to give his name. When asked whether editors knew the Onion piece was satirical when the People's Daily item was first posted, he declined to clarify, but added that they picked up the news after first seeing it on China's state-run Guangming Daily website.

He said that he hoped the incident wouldn't draw too much attention.

The chief editor for the People's Daily English channel, where the story also ran, declined to comment. "I can't say anything yet," said the woman who would only give her surname Wang.

While the People's Daily item was still up, The Onion updated the story to post a link and add a postscript: "For more coverage on The Onion's Sexiest Man Alive 2012, Kim Jong-Un, please visit our friends at the People's Daily in China, a proud Communist subsidiary of The Onion, Inc.

"Exemplary reportage, comrades," The Onion wrote.

It is not the first time a state-run Chinese newspaper has fallen for a fictional report by the just-for-laughs The Onion.

In 2002, the Beijing Evening News, one of the capital city's biggest tabloids at the time, published as news the fictional account that the U.S. Congress wanted a new building and that it might leave Washington. The Onion article was a spoof of the way sports teams threaten to leave cities in order to get new stadiums.

Two months ago, Iran's semiofficial Fars news agency reprinted a story from The Onion about a supposed survey showing that most rural white Americans would rather vote for Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad than President Barack Obama. It included a quote from a fictional West Virginia resident saying he'd rather go to a baseball game with Ahmadinejad because "he takes national defense seriously."

Psychology Uncovers Sex Appeal of Dark Personalities

Why are narcissists more physically attractive?

Although most people probably don?t consider narcissism or psychopathy desirable qualities in either their friends or romantic partners, many of us are mysteriously drawn toward people with these personality traits. Mean girls are often the most popular ones at school and vampires are sex symbols. Recent research has found that people with so-called ?dark? personality traits are more physically attractive than others. What is it about dark personalities that make them so appealing? The answer may help us understand what makes people with these personality traits so successful at exploiting others.

Nicholas Holtzman and Michael Strube of Washington University in St. Louis were interested in looking at the relationship between physical attractiveness and people?s tendencies towards narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism. They wanted to find out whether these three traits, referred to as the ?dark triad,? are associated with a greater ability to successfully enhance one?s physical appearance.

To test this idea, they invited 111 college students (64 percent women) into their laboratory. Each student was photographed soon after they arrived.? Then, after taking this initial photograph, each student asked to change out of their own clothes and put on a pair of gray sweatpants and a t-shirt.? Women were instructed to remove any makeup, and anyone with long hair was asked to pull it back into a ponytail. The students were then photographed in this more natural state. Holtzman and Strube showed both sets of photographs to a group of strangers who rated them in terms of physical attractiveness. By comparing the attractiveness ratings of the dressed-down and dressed-up students, the researchers were able to determine how much each student was able to make themselves more appealing through flashy clothes, makeup, accessories, etc.

Next Holtzman and Strube assessed the students? personalities and their tendencies towards narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism. They asked the students to rate themselves and to provide email addresses for a few of their friends so that the researchers could ask them to provide ratings as well. This combination of self and peer ratings was used to calculate a final set personality scores for each student. Furthermore, the students? ratings on narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism were combined into create a composite ?dark triad? score.

The dark triad score was positively correlated with their ?dressed-up? attractiveness ? a finding that mirrors previous findings. However, the dark triad score was not related to ratings of physical attractiveness in the dressed-down photos. In other words, people with dark personality traits are not seen as more physically attractive than others when you take away their freedom to wear their own clothes and makeup. People with dark personalities seem to be better at making themselves physically appealing.

The findings reinforce previous research showing that narcissists are more popular than others, literally at first sight. Mitja Back and Boris Egloff of Johannes Gutenberg-University of Mainz along with Stefan Schmukle at Westfalische Wilhelms-University of Muenster conducted a study in 2010 where they collected information on students? personalities and then had them briefly introduce themselves to one another. After these brief introductions, the students filled out surveys asking about the first impressions made by each other. Students scoring higher on narcissism were seen as more likeable.? People perceived the narcissists as more likeable and found that they had flashier appearances, more confident body language, and more attractive facial expressions. Together with Holtzman and Strube?s findings, this suggests that narcissists are more skilled at carrying and presenting themselves in a way that immediately impresses others.

Three Traits That Every Web Design Company Should Possess And ...

There are a few key things that every web design company should possess. To start, you need to make sure that any web design company that you are considering hiring is going to have a range of experience that will help to ensure that they are going to do a suitable job on your website. You should aso look for a company that has high quality graphic design, as graphic design is a very key aspect of any good web design company. Any company that you are considering working with is always going to have an extensive amount of coding knowledge in order to ensure that they will be able to customize the script for you to match your business flow.

Experience

The most important aspect as you were looking at a kelowna web design company, is the amount of experience that they have. Not only should they have a portfolio that will be available for you to view, and get a good idea of the level of quality that they provide, but there were also be reviews from previous clients online that can help you to better understand how they have been able to help previous customers, and the level of quality that you can expect from the project. Although experience is an important part of the process, you also need to look at the level of graphic design that they can provide as well.

Excellent Graphic Design

Graphic design is a very important aspect of the web design business. Without graphic design, you can get a great looking website, and will find that your website will come out looking much better than you originally anticipated. Oftentimes, the actual web designers of the company are going to be completely separate from the graphic designers, and the to work together to produce a high-quality finishing product. Graphic design on its own can be quite expensive, and is factored into the overall price of the web design. This will help you to ensure that your website looks as good as possible.

Coding Knowledge

With any web design project, you need to make sure that the company has an extensive amount of coding knowledge. This will help them to customize your website, and provide you with features that you otherwise would not receive. Depending on the level of customization that you are looking for, and the specific features that you build like, this can drastically affect the price of any web design that you are considering paying for, and should be something that is taken into account, but is not an end-all be-all., as you can hire a development company to work in conjunction with your vancouver web design company.

When you are evaluating a web design company, you need to start by looking at the level of experience that a company has, whether not they have good graphic designers that will help you to design the website, as well as a wide range of coding knowledge to help you properly customize the website.

As you look for a kelowna web design or a vancouver web design company, there are many things that you need to take into consideration.Visit http://www.acromediainc.com for more imformation.

It's all about your USERS when it comes to Unified Communications ...

Darryl Wilson | Area Practice Manager | Dimension Data Canada

There is no doubt that Unified Communications & Collaboration (UC&C) solutions have crossed the chasm to mass adoption.? Most, if not all, vendors and manufacturers in the marketplace have flooded the industry with products and solutions that speak to UC&C, and the market continues to demand it. We live in a global economy where people collaborate across regional, functional and country borders each and every day.? ?Over the past 10 years, we?ve seen clients traditionally starting with either ?voice over IP (VoIP) enabling? their PBXs for toll-bypass savings on long distance or having deployed IP telephony solutions (voice being transmitted on a converged data network) to cut communications costs.

These days, collaboration is much more than VoIP. Collaboration is now seen as something we ?do? (a human process) not something we ?use?. True collaboration enables a level of engagement, intimacy and trust not possible through traditional communications channels. If created and implemented properly, UC&C technology can enable true collaboration with peers, clients and partners, through technologies such as unified messaging, instant messaging, presence, desktop and application sharing and video conferencing.

It is imperative for any UC&C strategy to be designed with true collaboration in mind. In order for your business to be competitive in the marketplace and to attract and retain new talent, your UC&C strategy needs to be carefully structured and implemented to ensure adoption, therefore yielding the highest return on investment.

Putting the user at the centre of your UC&C strategy is critical and requires a deep understanding of the various user classes in your organisation. Traditionally, tools and applications used by the employees have been dictated based on device type.?? For UC&C and mobility to be adopted, we believe it should be ?User Centric? approach.? Prior to architecting or implementing a UC&C solution, one must segment the user base into various classes based on the user?s requirements. For example, some users remain within a single facility (eg the office) throughout the workday.? They are not mobile and they need tools and solutions at their workspace.? On the opposite side of the spectrum, you may have other users that are highly mobile.? Mobile workers require applications and tools on a variety of devices including laptops, smart phones and tablets.? Finally, you may have executives that require all of the above.? Each of these various user classes will require different tools and communication device options to be productive in their respective job functions. This will affect the way you license the UC&C solution as mobility or multiple device options likely require different licensing approaches. It is therefore critical to classify these users in advance to ensure the optimal blend of licenses. Using a ?one size fits all? mentality will in most cases not be the most cost effective approach.

Once the understanding of the user community is in place, the proper training and adoption programs, and support strategies coupled with the correct technology solution can be implemented.

Focusing on the user as you define your UC&C strategy will ensure you take advantage of the proper solutions and tools for the appropriate users in your business, resulting in increased levels of productivity with the return on investment you are looking for.

Unique treatment proposed for children's 'hidden' neurological disorder

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? An Indiana University study in the Journal of Child Neurology proposes an innovative treatment for developmental coordination disorder, a potentially debilitating neurological disorder in which the development of a child's fine or gross motor skills, or both, is impaired.

DCD strikes about one in 20 children, predominantly boys, and frequently occurs alongside ADHD, autism spectrum disorders and other better known conditions. Like ADHD, DCD has broad academic, social and emotional impact. It can severely affect reading, spelling and handwriting abilities; and insofar as children with DCD both struggle with and avoid physical activity, it can also lead to problems with self-esteem, obesity and injury.

Severity of the disorder varies, and as the researchers explain, it is sometimes called the "hidden disorder" because of the way those with milder cases develop coping strategies that conceal the disorder, such as using computers to avoid handwriting tasks, and wearing shirts without buttons, or shoes without laces. But children with DCD have been generally thought unable to learn or improve their motor skills.

"The results of this study were remarkable," said lead author Geoffrey Bingham, professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences. "After training the children over a five- to six-week period, one day a week for 20 minutes at a time, the differences between children with DCD and typically developing children were all but obliterated."

Key to the training was a unique technology: a three-dimensional virtual reality device, the PHANTOM Omni from Sensable Technologies, developed for the visualization of knots by topologists, who study geometric forms in space. Holding a stylus attached to a robot, participants in the study developed their fine motor skills by playing a game in which they traced a three-dimensional virtual path in the air, visually represented on a computer screen. Forces such as magnetic attraction and friction can be applied to the path and adjusted so participants could actually feel a surface that changed as the parameters were altered.

The study compared the progress of a group of eight 7- to 8-year-olds with DCD to a group of eight 7- to 8-year-old typically developing children in a three-dimensional tracing game. The task was to push a brightly colored fish along a visible path on a computer screen from the starting location to the finish point while racing a competitor fish.

The training started with the highest level of magnetic attraction, slowest competitor and shortest path. The goal of the training was to allow the children to progress at their own pace through the different combinations and levels of attraction, paths and competitors.

The children's 'Catch-22'

As Bingham's collaborator Winona Snapp-Childs, a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, explains, the particular challenge facing children with DCD is a "Catch-22" situation. Children must first be able to approximate a movement by actively generating it themselves before they can improve it through practice and repetition. But because children with DCD have been unable to produce this initial movement, they have been unable to improve their skills.

The technology provided the tool needed to overcome this impasse. It gave both the support needed to produce the movement, as well as the flexibility to let children actively generate the movement themselves. It allowed the children to do what they otherwise could not do: produce the requisite initial movements that could then be practiced to yield quantitative improvements.

The researchers say the technology could potentially be widely accessible: It can be used without a therapist and is portable enough to be put in clinics, classrooms or the home. It can also be adjusted to suit the needs of children across the spectrum of DCD severity.

The study, "A Sensorimotor Approach to the Training of Manual Actions in Children With Developmental Coordination Disorder," is appearing on the Journal of Child Neurology Online First. Co-authors are Snapp-Child; and Mark Mon-Williams, Institute of Psychological Sciences, University of Leeds, U.K. Bingham directs the Perception/Action Lab at IU Bloomington.

This work was supported by a grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Mountain Biking Legendary Retallack Lodge's Extraordinary New ...

Andrew Whiteford, Eric Porter and Carston Oliver drop into "Monster;" Photograph by Chad Spector

I have to confess that I?ve been smitten with this place for nearly 12 years.? It was love at first sight for me back in January of 2001, and it?s only grown more serious during the 14 trips since. British Columbia?s Retallack Lodge is known for as having perhaps the best steep tree and deep powder skiing on the planet.? It?s legendary status is cemented in the minds eyes of skiers all over the globe via the pages of countless magazines and myriad film segments. In large part it was this entity and the people that make it work that were the catalyst for my photography career, serving as both inspiration and enabler. So when rumors of a summer mountain bike operation began swirling two years ago, I was keenly interested in what they would conjure up.

Photograph by Chad Spector

While still in its infancy, the formula for summer fun is strikingly similar to the one they?ve used to create a winter nirvana: Mix equal doses of epic terrain, a beautiful lodge, easily accessible yet utterly remote locale, stunning scenery, and amazing food; throw in a healthy dose of pro riders, film companies, and photographers; then let nature take its course.

Photograph by Chad SpectorThe only slight variation is that of building trail, which their crew is doing at a prodigious rate under the watchful eyes of Paddy Kaye from Joyride Bike Parks and Kooteney trail building legend Riley McIntosh.? Factor in the seemingly non-stop flow of mountain bike media that has been setting up camp here and there?s little doubt that next year?s magazines and video edits will be crammed full of Retallack?s super hero loam, flowing berms, steep chutes, and perfectly wrought features.

Photograph by Chad Spector

Due to a particularly ugly run in with a branch that found its way seven inches into my abdomen, our August trip was postponed to late September. I was lucky to be alive, much less able to ride a bike again when Eric Porter, Carston Oliver, Andrew Whiteford, and I finally headed to BC.? Our lucky streak continued as the fall colors were popping, the weather was perfect and World Cup Downhill legend Kirt Voreis was at the lodge with his wife, Lyndsey, to serve as tour guides.? What followed was exactly what I had hoped would happen, the crew gelled, the riding was sublime, and summer lodge life at Retallack proved to be just as good as it is in the winter.

Andrew, Carston, and Eric in old-growth forest; Photograph by Chad Spector

Trail building takes time, so for now there?s only one trail that leads back to the lodge.? The ?House Trail? drops a quaint 4,500 vertical feet and delivers the full gamut of BC riding with flowy berms, steep chutes through old growth timber, and epic man-made features before it spits you out just above the lodge into a skills park with a pump track, various size drops, a dual slalom course, and a few fun wooden features.? Don?t despair though, the tenure allows Retallack to guide a bevy of local trail networks that include the steeper than steep ?Monster? descent with sublime views over Kooteney Lake and the town of Kaslo, as well as the ?best day of your life? heli-drop on top of the legendary 7,500-vertical- foot roller coaster of dirt sculpting perfection known as ?Powerslave? that was made famous in the LifeCyclesfilm.

Photograph by Chad Spector

It?s already more than enough to keep you occupied for a five-day stay and Retallack?s plan is to build a massive network of trails leading directly to and from the lodge with an eye towards even more flow, the type of trails that induce giggles and grins from all levels of riders.? Having seen first hand what they have to work with, I can?t wait to return year after year to see what new playgrounds are created.

NASA rover tracks big dust storm on Mars

A NASA spacecraft is keeping tabs on a vast dust storm on Mars that has spawned changes in the Martian atmosphere felt by two rovers on the planet's surface.

The Martian dust storm was first spotted by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) on Nov. 10 and has been tracked ever since. The agency's Mars rover Opportunity has seen a slight drop in atmospheric clarity due to the storm. Meanwhile the newer Curiosity rover ? which has a built-in weather station ? has seen a drop in air pressure and slightly increased nighttime temperatures halfway around the planet from Opportunity, NASA officials said.

"This is now a regional dust storm," Rich Zurek, NASA's chief Mars scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., said in a statement Wednesday. "It has covered a fairly extensive region with its dust haze and it is in a part of the planet were some regional storms have grown into global dust hazes."

NASA is combining observations by the Curiosity rover and MRO to create a complete picture of the Martian dust storm. The Spain-built Rover Environmental Monitoring Station on Curiosity gives scientists a real-time look at conditions over the rover's position inside Gale Crater.

The Mars Color Imager on MRO was built by Malin Space Science Systems in San Diego. It was Malin's Bruce Cantor who first spotted the storm in photos from the powerful Mars camera on Nov. 10. [ Amazing Mars Photos by MRO Spacecraft ]

"For the first time since the Viking missions of the 1970s, we are studying a regional dust storm both from orbit and with a weather station on the surface," Zurek said.

Because the dust from the current storm is absorbing sunlight instead of reflecting it, a warming effect 16 miles above the Martian tempest has been seen by MRO. The effect, first recorded by MRO's Mars Climate Sounder on Nov. 16, has led to a temperature increase of 45 degrees Fahrenheit so far.

Warmer temperatures are not confined to the Martian south. The circulation of the Martian atmosphere has also led to a hot spot in the planet's northern polar regions. The temperature on Mars is typically about minus 80 degrees F (minus 60 degrees C), but can vary depending on location and the Martian season.

Regional dust storms on Mars were observed in 2001 and 2007, but not between those years or in the time since. The Martian year lasts two Earth years, with major dust storm events following a seasonal pattern. Dust storm season on Mars began a few weeks ago as the Martian spring began in the planet's southern hemisphere, NASA officials said.

"One thing we want to learn is why do some Martian dust storm get to this size and stop growing, while others this size keep growing and go global," Zurek said.

A global dust storm on Mars could have implications for the Opportunity and Curiosity rovers. If the current dust storm were to expand to cover the Red Planet, the dust settling on Opportunity's solar panels could reduce the rover's power supply. Opportunity has been exploring the plains of Meridiani Planum since its 2004 landing on Mars.

NASA's newer Mars rover Curiosity, meanwhile, would likely see increased haze in its photos of nearby terrain, as well as an above normal air temperature. The 1-ton Curiosity rover landed on Mars on Aug. 5 and is powered by a radioisotope thermoelectric generator that is unaffected by dust storms.?

(AP) ? A judge is considering granting a new trial to a 37-year-old suburban Chicago man convicted of murdering his wife and three children.

Judge Daniel Rozak said Monday that he will decide Tuesday whether Christopher Vaughn deserves a new trial or whether to proceed with sentencing Vaughn for his existing murder convictions. He faces a mandatory life term if his convictions stand.

Vaughn's attorney, George Lenard, told the judge Monday that his client deserves a new trial, in part because of the Drew Peterson trial.

Lenard says the behavior of Peterson's attorneys in front of the cameras made jurors think less of all defense attorneys, including Vaughn's. The trials coincided and were both held in Joliet.

Vaughn was convicted in September of murdering his wife and three children in 2007.

Olfactory Overload Causes White Smell

60-Second Science

Combining a wide variety of odors gives rise to a nondescript scent, just as combining colors of many wavelengths generates white light. Karen Hopkin reports.

More 60-Second Science

Your morning coffee. A baking pie. That turkey in the oven. There are some smells you just can?t get enough of. But mix them and other scents all together and you get, well, nothing much.

According to a new study, a mash-up of 20 or 30 different odors gives you something entirely nondescript: almost a non-smell, if you will. The finding appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. [Tali Weiss et al, Perceptual convergence of multi-component mixtures in olfaction implies an olfactory white]

If you?ve ever taken physics, you might remember that combining colors of many different wavelengths generates light that?s white. And blending sounds of many different frequencies produces white noise.

Well, researchers got to wondering whether there?s an equivalent phenomenon for olfaction: call it ?white smell.? So they whipped up various combinations of 80 distinct chemicals and had volunteers take a whiff. When the olfactory ingredient list topped 30, one cocktail smelled pretty much the same as any other, even when the mixtures didn?t have a single ingredient in common.

The scent was not unpleasant. A professional perfumer called it ?aromatic,? which is like saying that the light was, well, light. So enjoy the smells of the holiday season. But try not to sniff too many at once.

?Karen Hopkin

Black Friday sales online top $1 billion for 1st time: comScore

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Black Friday retail sales online this year topped $1 billion for the first time ever as more consumers used the Internet do their holiday shopping, comScore Inc said on Sunday.

Online sales jumped at least 22 percent on Black Friday - from sales of $816 million on the same day last year, according to comScore data.

E-commerce accounts for less than 10 percent of consumer spending in the United States. However, it is growing much faster than bricks-and-mortar retail as shoppers are lured by low prices, convenience, faster shipping and wide selection.

ShopperTrak, which counts foot traffic in physical retail stores, estimated Black Friday sales of $11.2 billion, down 1.8 percent from the same day last year.

"Online has been around 9 percent of total holiday sales, but it could breach 10 percent for the first time this season," said Scot Wingo, chief executive of ChannelAdvisor, which helps merchants sell more on websites, including Amazon.com and eBay.com.

ComScore expects online retail spending to rise 17 percent to $43.4 billion through the whole holiday season. That is above the 15 percent increase last season and ahead of the retail industry's expectation for a 4.1 percent increase in overall spending this holiday.

It's not clear yet whether strong Black Friday sales online will weaken growth on Cyber Monday, which has been the biggest e-commerce day in the United States in recent years.

"Cyber Monday will be a big day, but not as much of a big day as it has been in the past," said Mia Shernoff, executive vice president for Chase Paymentech, a payment processing unit of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.. "Faster broadband Internet connections in the office used to drive this. But now many consumers have faster connections at home and smart phones and tablets - they don't have to wait."

MOBILE SHOPPING GROWTH

A big source of online shopping growth this holiday season has come from increased use of smart phones, which let people buy online even when they are in physical stores, and by tablet computers, which have spurred more online shopping in the evenings, Wingo and others said.

Mobile devices accounted for 26 percent of visits to retail websites and 16 percent of purchases on Black Friday. That was up from 18.1 percent and 10.3 percent, respectively, on the same day last year, according to International Business Machines, which analyzes online traffic and transactions from 500 U.S. retailers.

Amazon and eBay benefit from increased use of mobile devices for shopping because they are consistently the top two online retail destinations for mobile users, ChannelAdvisor's Wingo said.

Amazon.com was the most visited retail website on Black Friday, with more than 28 million visits, followed by Wal-Mart Stores Inc's website, with 18.4 million and Best Buy Co's site, which had 9.2 million visits, according to Hitwise.

Worth noting: eBay runs one of the largest online marketplaces, rather than being a retailer, so its online traffic was not reported by Hitwise. However, eBay said the volume of mobile transactions on its marketplace jumped 153 percent on Black Friday from a year earlier.

ChannelAdvisor clients' same-store sales on Amazon.com shot up 38 percent on Black Friday, compared with a year earlier. Last year's year-over-year growth was 50 percent.

Client same-store sales on eBay's marketplace rose 31 percent on Black Friday, compared with a year earlier. Last year's year-over-year growth was 15 percent, according to ChannelAdvisor.

PRICE PRESSURE

While mobile devices may be good for sales, they may not be so good for retail profit margins. Smart phones give shoppers real-time access to product prices online, potentially exacerbating the usual holiday discounting and price wars.

Black Friday online transactions jumped almost 30 percent, but the average ticket price was down more than 11 percent, according to Chase Paymentech, which reports data from its 50 largest e-commerce merchant clients.

"It's driving prices down," Shernoff said. "Consumers are checking prices in stores and showing the retailer, and the retailer will succumb to the lowest price online so they don't lose the consumer."

Green Bay looking for a little revenge Sunday night after last year's playoff loss

By Greg Bedard

NBCSports.com contributor

updated 6:23 p.m. ET Nov. 24, 2012

Greg Bedard

Sunday Night Football is turning into rivalry football.

A week after the Ravens and Steelers battled each other in the AFC North, one of the burgeoning NFC rivalries, Giants-Packers, will have another installment at MetLife Stadium.

With two young, elite quarterbacks in Aaron Rodgers and Eli Manning leading each team, Giants-Packers is looking a lot like the successor to Colts-Patriots, Tom Brady vs. Peyton Manning: two teams in different divisions who find a way to see each other often between the regular and postseason (sixth meeting since 2007 with Packers holding 3-2 edge).

Both Giants' wins against the Packers have come in January (2007 and ?11), in the postseason, as the Giants marched into Lambeau Field, left with a physical victory and went on to win the Super Bowl.

Last year?s 37-20 loss to the Giants ended a dream season for the Packers, who were 15-1 at the time. They lost because their execution was terrible ? giving up a Hail Mary touchdown, dropping four passes, turning the ball over four times and a plethora of missed tackles.

It?s safe to say the Packers (7-3) haven?t forgotten their performance, and the beating the Giants (6-4) put on them. Not that Green Bay will acknowledge that. It is focused on this game, not the past.

?Watching the playoff game, it wasn?t fun, I think that?s obvious,? coach Mike McCarthy said this week. ?But it?s part of our preparation for the week. A lot of the same players played in that game, played in the regular-season game (in 2011). We all understand how the season ended, but we?re focused on 8-3.?

A look at the keys for each team:

Packers
Rodgers can?t hold the ball:
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is an exceptional player with smarts, a terrific arm and very quick feet that allow him to keep plays alive or make them on his own. But sometimes Rodgers tries to do too much, tries to keep the play alive too long and that can lead to protection issues. Rodgers has been sacked 32 times this season, which is more than any other NFL quarterback. Some of those are on Rodgers for holding onto the ball too long. While the Giants rank just 13th with 25 sacks, they are capable of dominating a game with ends Jason Pierre-Paul, Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck. McCarthy needs to put in a quick-pass game plan, and Rodgers needs to stick to it outside of called shot plays.

Stop the run: The Giants have gotten a bit out of whack lately with their pass-run balance, but they?ll look to establish the run more against the Packers. The Giants need the run to make their passing game, which has struggled of late, really click. The Packers (11th in the league) have done a nice job against the run now that their personnel have settled down. The defensive line of Ryan Pickett, Jerel Worthy and B.J. Raji are very sturdy and have allowed inside linebackers A.J. Hawk and Brad Jones to fill nicely. The Packers want the Giants to stay pass heavy because they?re in a slump and could get some three-and-outs that could get the Packers going.

Do your job: When the Packers have struggled the past few years, it hasn?t been because of what the opponent has done, it?s because the Packers have killed themselves with poor execution. If the Packers execute their blocks, catch the ball and tackle well, they?re a tough matchup for anyone. But they haven?t done that consistently. This also includes kicker Mason Crosby, who has been in a terrible slump. He has to make his kicks early because if he?s an issue, it could change the way the Packers play in Giants' territory for the rest of the game.

Giants
Protect up front:
Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers will probably look to bring pressure against the Giants because his front seven has a tough time winning with standout outside linebacker Clay Matthews out. Capers also knows he can?t let Eli Manning have clean reads, and his line is ripe for the taking. The Giants have had a rough time of late protecting Manning ? they were destroyed by the Bengals. Expect the Packers to throw a ton of overload blitzes at the right side of the Giants? line, where guard Kevin Boothe and David Diehl have been the weak spots. The Giants chip a lot with the running backs out of the backfield, and they might have to think about keeping a tight end in to help with protection. The Packers will be coming.

Get after Rodgers: With excellent right tackle Bryan Bulaga out for the season, the Packers have had to do a line dance with left guard T.J. Lang moving to right tackle, and backup Evan Dietrich-Smith in at left guard. Both compete really hard but are limited in their ability at those spots. Left tackle Marshall Newhouse has had problems on occasion this season, and center Jeff Saturday is not the player he once was. The Giants? defensive line should be able to dominate this game up front against the run and the pass. And that should give the Giants a really good chance of winning the game.

Get physical with the Packers? receivers: The Packers have talented targets for Rodgers in Greg Jennings (questionable after abdominal surgery), Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Randall Cobb and tight end Jermichael Finley. But the book on them is that they don?t like contact and can be thrown off their game if defensive backs are physical with them. It also throws off the timing of the passing offense and causes Rodgers to hold the ball longer. The Giants should try to be physical with the Packers? receivers, but they should be careful with Cobb. The speedy slot receiver is lining up in different spots every week, including running back. He could be a big problem if the Giants don?t get their hands on him. That means everyone ? ends, outside linebackers and defensive backs ? needs to make sure they hit Cobb on his releases. If he runs free, he might go all the way to the end zone.

Tax increases could factor in MLB negotiations

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:27 a.m. ET Nov. 23, 2012

(Adds AP Photo.)

Team executives and agents wandered into the Agave Sunset lounge at the resort where the general managers' meetings were held in Indian Wells, Calif. Four of the six flat-screen televisions were showing election coverage, with the other two turned to sports.

President Barack Obama's victory over Mitt Romney was of as much interest to baseball's money men as the game scores, given the millions of dollars routinely guaranteed in player contracts these days.

As free agents negotiate deals this offseason, tax policy is an area that comes up along with the usual issues. Some players are wrangling for as much money as they can get before the end of the year to avoid a take hike in 2013.

"Front-loading would make sense if at all possible as tax rates will definitely go up on January 1st on all high-income taxpayers," agent Greg Genske said in an email. "The only question is HOW MUCH will the rates increase????"

This much is known for now: Starting Jan. 1, there is an additional 0.9 percent Medicare tax on wages above $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for married couples filing jointly under the federal Affordable Care Act, a rise to 2.35 percent.

In addition, the Bush tax cuts are scheduled to expire at the end of the year, which could raise the highest marginal federal tax rate from 35 percent to 39.6 percent - although a deal between Obama and Congress could change that.

Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane figures agents will be on top of the changes - but the results of negotiations about the so-called fiscal cliff are unpredictable.

"I think if you're hopping around the potential of tax reform, you're probably chasing your tail," Beane said. "If they can predict when something's going to happen, then they're much further ahead than the lawmakers."

With baseball contracts worth as much as $275 million (Alex Rodriguez) and the major league minimum $480,000, tax policy affects every player who spends most of the season in the big leagues.

All-Star shortstop Jose Reyes, who has a $10 million salary next year, was traded from the Miami Marlins to the Toronto Blue Jays. While Florida has no state income tax, Reyes remains a New York resident from his days with the Mets and had high taxes to begin with. Ontario's provincial tax rises to 11.16 percent - on top of a Canadian federal level as high as 29 percent.

Among states with big league teams, income tax rates go as high as 10.3 percent in California and 8.82 percent in New York. At the other end, Florida, Texas and Washington have no state income tax. The top rate in the District of Columbia is 8.95 percent.

"I like ours; we're a no-tax state," Seattle Mariners general manager Jack Zdurienck said. "When we sit down with players, that's a huge benefit. I think any player out there that has an opportunity to play in a no-tax state gets benefits, enormous benefits. We hope that weighs in our favor."

According to an analysis done by a tax lawyer on the staff of agent Scott Boras, a player with a $10 million salary and average deductions who plays in Florida and is a resident of that state will see his taxes rise from $3.45 million this year to $4.09 million next year under current law. If traded to the Blue Jays, that player's 2013 tax would rise to $4.27 million. And if dealt to a California team, the tax would go up to $4.4 million.

By moving money from salary into signing bonuses, players can sometimes lower their state tax bills. Shifting money into December this year could reduce federal taxes.

"Tax measures are going to be discussed, but change most likely carries compromise on both sides," Boras said. "One thing is clear based on the nation's ballot totals: Many Americans are split on this subject."

In the end, most free agents choose teams based on where they want to play, not on lowering the tax cut on their income.

"It's a factor, maybe even a small factor," agent Craig Landis said. "If there's 50 variables, you can now make it a 51st. It's not usually going to be the drive, but it's something to consider."

And for teams, only the big spenders need worry.

Beane's Athletics, for instance, had the lowest payroll in the majors last season.

"It's probably not a situation I'll have to face in Oakland too much," he said.
