Arsenal, Man City respond to Euro woes to EPL wins

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:18 p.m. ET Oct. 27, 2012

LONDON (AP) - Manchester City and Arsenal responded to midweek Champions League setbacks with unconvincing 1-0 wins in the English Premier League on Saturday.

Carlos Tevez secured City's victory over Swansea, putting the champions a point behind Chelsea before the leaders host Manchester United on Sunday.

"They sat quite deep and made it difficult for us to get the ball forward," City midfielder Gareth Barry said.

It took Mikel Arteta's late goal for Arsenal to overcome winless, 10-man Queens Park Rangers and rise to fourth - seven points behind Chelsea.

While Arsenal's attack lacked cutting edge, the team was boosted by midfielder Jack Wilshere successfully returning after 17 months out of competitive action.

"It's been a long journey but I'm back now ... we didn't underestimate QPR and knew they were going to be strong, especially from midfield and the wingers," the 20-year-old Englishman said.

The match at Etihad Stadium was the longest since the Premier League's inception in 1992, with more than 12 minutes of stoppage time after potentially serious injuries to Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm and City defender Micah Richards led to them being carried off during the second half.

Vorm is set to be out for up to six weeks, Swansea manager Michael Laudrup said.

The only goal came in the 61st minute, with Tevez sending the dipping shot into the bottom corner of the net beyond Vorm, who was injured while stretching to save.

Richards was later running down the pitch when he went down in agony holding his right knee. After receiving oxygen on the pitch he was carried off.

At Emirates Stadium, Arteta's winner came four minutes after QPR defender Stephane M'Bia was sent off in the 80th for kicking out at Thomas Vermaelen while on the ground after being fouled by the rival defender.

Olivier Giroud's initial header from Andrei Arshavin's cross was saved by Cesar but Arteta pounced to head against the bar and he prodded the rebound into the net.

The win lifted some of the gloom after successive losses in the league and Champions League.

"I am very happy with the result because we lost two big games and you could see the confidence was a bit jaded," manager Arsene Wenger said. "But we were serious and we moved the ball quite well. We needed to be patient."

Wigan emerged victorious for the first time at home this season as West Ham was beaten 2-1.

Ivan Ramis volleyed Wigan in front in the 8th and James McArthur's goal early in the second half proved decisive as James Tomkins pulled one back for West Ham in stoppage time.

There was also a late goal at Reading, with Hal Robson-Kanu retrieving a 3-3 draw with Fulham - the fourth goal in the last 13 minutes.

Reading remains in the relegation zone, clear of Southampton on goal difference and a point ahead of QPR.

Aston Villa and Norwich are just out of the drop zone after drawing 1-1.

Stoke endured a 0-0 draw with Sunderland but extended its unbeaten home run in the league to 11 matches.

BERLIN (AP) - Borussia Dortmund won 2-0 at Freiburg to get its Bundesliga title defense back on track in difficult conditions on Saturday.

Heavy snowfall hampered both teams in a hard-fought game.

Neven Subotic scored in the 54th minute and Mario Goetze made the game safe for Dortmund with seven minutes remaining.

Jefferson Farfan's 77th-minute strike was enough for Schalke to complete a perfect week with a 1-0 win at home over Nuremberg. Schalke won the Ruhr derby against Dortmund last weekend and then 2-0 at Arsenal in the Champions League midweek.

Wolfsburg beat Fortuna Duesseldorf 4-1 away to end its seven-game run without a win in interim coach Lorenz-Guenther Koestner's first game in charge.

----

PARIS (AP) - Lille bounced back from its midweek Champions League defeat by beating Valenciennes 2-1 in the French league on Saturday.

Lille, which lost 1-0 at home to Bayern Munich on Tuesday, made the perfect start when Valenciennes defender Gaetan Bong turned the ball into his own net under pressure from Lille striker Nolan Roux in the second minute as they were both stretching for a loose ball.

Valenciennes midfielder Carlos Sanchez was sent off in the 28th for picking up two quick yellow cards.

Lille got its second goal just before the break when forward Salomon Kalou broke free and passed wide to winger Dimitri Payet, who scored with a powerful low shot across goalkeeper Nicolas Penneteau.

Anthony Le Tallec pulled a goal back for Valenciennes with 20 minutes remaining after a fine run and pass from midfielder Gael Danic.

---

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) - Malaga remained third in the Spanish league after drawing 0-0 at struggling Espanyol on Saturday, while Salva Sevilla's early goal gave Real Betis a 1-0 home win over Valencia.

Malaga outplayed Espanyol in the first half, with defender Martin Demichelis coming close with a pair of headers at Cornella-El Prat stadium.

In Seville, Betis midfielder Sevilla drove his volley past goalkeeper Diego Alves, who got a hand to the ball but not enough to keep it out, to score what proved to be the winner in the ninth minute.

---

MILAN (AP) - Serie A strugglers Siena and Palermo played out a dull goalless draw on Saturday, in a clash between the league's bottom two clubs.

Both teams struggled to carve out goalscoring opportunities. Palermo fared the better in the second half but failed to score for the sixth time this season.

---

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Christos Aravidis scored twice, including an 87th minute winner, to lead Panionios to a 2-1 victory over host Panthrakikos in the Greek league Saturday.

Aravidis had opened the scoring in the 18th but Juan Manuel Munafo equalized for Panthrakikos in the 59th.

The win propelled Panionios to second place in the Greek league, 3 points behind leader Olympiakos. The defending champion will have the chance to widen its lead when it travels to Aris Monday.

Panionios moved ahead of PAOK, which was held to a scoreless draw at Kerkyra, prompting an angry PAOK coach Giorgos Donis to declare after the game that his players failed to follow any of his instructions.

Also Saturday, Levadiakos and Asteras played to a scoreless draw.

Refuge Chambers: How do we change the game in the Australian ...

Refuge Chambers: How do we change the game in the Australian Coal industry?

The refuge chamber industry is in many respects still in its infancy having begun in earnest only 13 years ago.

MineARC was there at the beginning having recognised the opportunity to offer a real chance at survival in an emergency with the introduction of vital air conditioning systems and scrubbers to remove deadly CO2 and CO gas.

In those early days the regulations in West Australian mining made no reference of any significance to providing refuge other than fresh air bays.

In many respects it was the ?in the field tests? by MineARC that helped the then Department of Mines in Western Australia to produce its first paper on the use of refuge chambers in metalliferous mines, back in 2005.

In the years since, regulations around Australia have incorporated refuge chambers as a key component of mine planning.

Overseas the situation is very similar with countries adopting some of the Australian ideals into their own regulations, especially the US and Chinese coal industries; both countries having stretched the boundaries of what is possible.

China for example, demands chambers are capable of surviving a 45PSI overpressure blast and flash fires up to 1200C.

As an aside, it?s not enough just to have a chamber that is capable of achieving this, you also need a detailed plan around placement of the chambers to ensure the people entrapped within survive -not much point proclaiming the robustness of a six tonne chamber that gets picked up by the shockwave of a methane explosion, ending further out-bye than it started and buried in debris.?The occupants within would have stood no chance of survival.

The message is simple; it is not enough just to buy a chamber, a deal of thought must go in to how chambers are positioned to ensure they provide a genuine survival opportunity. Issues such as ensuring placement out of the direct path of potential shockwaves are critical.

There has been significant research conducted in the US on methane explosions, within a disused coal mine, to establish just how quickly a shockwave will dissipate and the subsequent best points to locate refuge chambers.

Documents such as ?Explosions and Refuge Chambers: Effects of blast pressure on structures and the human body, by R. Karl Zipf, Jr., Ph.D., P.E. and Kenneth L. Cashdollar, give considerable insight into the surrounding issues.

Refuge chamber manufacturers continue to develop better solutions and different ways to approach old problems.

For the most part the changes have been evolutionary rather than revolutionary. And for the most part that has suited the coal industries.

It is interesting to note that while we as manufacturers have produced those incremental changes, we haven?t been challenged or pushed by the Australian coal industry to find out the extent of what is possible; to find a ?game changer? so to speak, that could significantly improve survival opportunities for miners.

In recent months, one game changing initiative arrived on our desk via Queensland, but not from Queensland coal, rather, a tunnelling project in suburban Brisbane. MineARC had won the tender to produce four custom built refuge chambers for the construction phase of said project.

However, in the final stages of consultation with MineARC engineers there was a twist. As a result of an independent assessment by the QLD Fire Brigade, MineARC was asked if it was possible to produce a chamber capable of protecting the occupants from a fire over an extended duration, i.e. not just a flash fire, but a fire lasting a period of time.

Research indicated that to date few refuge chamber manufacturers had made any significant attempt to meet this specification, so, MineARC engineers set about investigating possible design solutions.

It is important to note that the primary purpose of the chamber, to keep its occupants safe for 36 hours, was still required. However, with the Fire Brigade?s additional specification, the chamber would now also need to maintain a safe internal environment when faced with prolonged temperatures of up to 300?C.?

It became immediately apparent that there were many issues to overcome.

Firstly, refuge chambers operate using external battery banks, external air conditioning condensers, external sirens, lights and so on - all of which would not survive temperatures of 300oC.

Secondly, as an excellent heat conductor, all steel on steel contact throughout the chamber will result in transient heat from the outside reaching the inside.

The list of problems went on and on.

After numerous rounds of material fabrication analysis and simulations, a combination of internal and external cladding achieved the desired results.

Along the way we learned a lot; one thing we discovered was that fireproof material did not necessarily mean fireproof. For example one product rated at 200oC, if exposed to temperatures in excess of 300oC, would suddenly become an accelerant!

Our solution involved two independent air-conditioning and scrubbing systems, one for normal entrapment and the other in the presence of extreme heat.

If an extreme heat scenario eventuates, the chamber would close insulation panels to protect critical equipment such as batteries and condensers to ensure they remained functional later on.

The end result:? The client is satisfied, the QLD Fire Brigade is equally satisfied, and we now have a new approach to prolonged fire risk that easily transfers over into mining and other industries.?

The game changer starts simply by asking the question; how safe can we make it? It forces us to re-examine how we approach risks inside mines, in particular coal mines.

As a result MineARC now has coal mine refuge chambers that can withstand a 45PSI to 90PSI blast and flash fires up to 1200oC; chambers that can endure ongoing heat and fire up to 300oC for hours and can provide the critical requirements to sustain life in high explosion risk zones for in excess of 96 hours.

Yet so far we haven?t found anyone in the Australian coal industry who thinks this level of safety might be of any value. In fact the vast majority of the Australian coal industry continues to hold the belief that refuge chambers have no role to play in emergency response planning.

The most recent quote request we received from an Australian coal mine was a case in point.

We provided a solution based on our experience manufacturing coal refuge chambers in the US and China.

Unfortunately the tender document was a confusing mix of drastically watered down requirements.?

So much so that in the end we began to look back on our own core beliefs, what we would and would not put the MineARC name to.?

In the end we felt that any resulting chamber based on the tender specifications supplied was unlikely to meet our own standards. It resulted in us withdrawing our offer to quote; the first time we have done so in our history.

Our question is simple; we have hundreds of refuge chambers in coal mines in the United States and China providing resistance to fire, explosions, smoke and other forms of toxic gas. What is the game changer for Australian coal?

?

Neighborhood Toy Store Day 2012 ? Here and There ? A New ...

I demand one-on-one customer service and satisfaction. ? ? I am a touchy-feely person who evaluates every purchase by how its built as well as its price. ?I try to avoid sight unseen catalog and online shopping. ?I prefer to shop locally. ?Small businesses help my town thrive economically with customer convenience a big plus factor. ?No pig-in-the-poke for me unless it is a game.

I know how frustrating it can be to find the?right, no correct that to?perfect?toy high in demand but low in supply, at mass market retailers. ?Even more frustrating is giving it to a child and finding it does?not work. ?Return policies too often send a message: ?DON?T! ?Even with a gift receipt, too many big businesses not only limit exchanges and returns but also ?insist the product be returned to the manufacturer at the customer?s expense.

Nothing quantifiable like ?checks, plastic, cash, or practical like clothes for ?the family?hubby, the children, their mates, and the grandchildren. ? I want to see joy, delight, and excitement in their faces. ?So I favor fun things with ?woohoo factors and?frequent?storekeepers who know my face, likes and dislikes, and pocketbook. ?I look suspiciously on words like ??Assembly Required,? ?Small Parts?, and ?Needs Batteries?. ?Long ago frugal me discovered buying high-quality toys is an investment.

I recently learned that The American Specialty Toy Retailing Association (ASTRA) launched its Your Neighborhood Toy Store website. I recommend it to anyone and everyone who wants to find today?s best toys. The best thing about the site is its toy store locator. ?Look to its feature articles, play news and resources, calendar of events, and toy buying guide for ideas on what is smart, local, and unique.

Saturday, November 10, 2012, is the Third Annual Neighborhood Toy Store Day. Participating stores are hosting activities, craft projects, live performances, and special discounts to kick off holiday season buying. ?What is printed on the toy packaging itself, example design features and safety standards, is too easily overlooked. ? Therefore, an?opportunity at hands-on events allows me to watch children young and old at play and check out working toys myself.

Building eye coordination and manual dexterity never begins too soon. ?As ?toddler I remember having a crib and a playpen, books, blocks, puzzles, top, ball, dolls, doll houses, and stuffed animals but no crib toys whatsoever. ?Maybe that is why I am such a klutz at athletics. ?Bet a single toy that could mysteriously stack, balance, nest, and spin would have developed more than just my curiosity. ?Accordingly I pick Tobbles Neo (SMRP $27.99) by Fat Brain Toy Company as my second top recommendation. ?It won ASTRA?s Early Play/0-3 Award with good reason. ?Babies 6 months+ will explore their senses and gain spatial awareness ?as thy interact with New Tobbles six graduated two-color spheres multi-textured, weighted balls.

Frequent readers know Santa Claus never got me the toy train I requested year after year until I bought one of my own. ?My grand babies, not to experience the denial of my youth, all get toy trains sooner or later. ?Accordingly it is not surprise that that the BRIO Classic Figure 8 Train Set (SMRP $49.99) by Schylling Toys is my top recommendation. ?It won ASTRA?s Classic Play/0-7 Award with good reason. Not only does this classic wooden railway set with 15 track pieces, engine, two cars, and accessories promote open-end and creative play for children 2+, it ?also builds coordination and thinking skills.

Conservatives and Liberals Are Equally Generous, Study Finds ...

Political views do not predict how much money a person will donate to charity, according to a new study.?But conservatives and liberals do support different kinds of causes.

Conservatives and people in conservative-leaning states are more likely than others to donate to religious organizations, while people in liberal-leaning states are more likely to donate to secular nonprofits, the study found.

The study was conducted by MIT?researchers Michele Margolis and Michael Sances and was based on data from the National Opinion Research Center. It follows a study by three scholars released in May that suggested fundraisers should phrase pitches differently when appealing to Republicans versus Democrats.

Still, the findings about overall giving rates run counter to previous studies by scholars that have shown that religious conservatives give more than secular liberals.

Arthur Brooks, president of the American Enterprise Institute and formerly professor of public administration at Syracuse University, used public giving data to make that conclusion in the 2006 book Who Really Cares: The Surprising Truth About Compassionate Conservatism.

More recently, a Chronicle analysis of 2008 IRS tax data?found states that had voted for the Republican candidate John McCain in the most recent presidential election had given more of their discretionary income to charity than states that had supported the Democratic President Barack Obama.

Twitter principles of social networking increase family success in nesting birds

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? New research carried out by scientists at Universities in Exeter, France and Switzerland reveals for the first time the importance of social networking in producing a successful family.

The study found that, regardless of how big and healthy individual chicks are, what really matters to their chances of surviving and breeding is how siblings in the nest interact with each other, with cooperative families faring best.

Differences in patterns of feeding between mothers and fathers were a key factor in determining the behaviour of their offspring, according to the study published online October 23 in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Mothers selected weaker, hungrier nestlings while fathers did the opposite, choosing those who were the most competitive.

Dr Nick Royle, from the University of Exeter, was involved in the study, alongside scientists from Universities in Toulouse, Bern and Basel. He said: "Whilst it is well-established that large, strong offspring are generally expected to be more successful than small, less well-nourished offspring, it has not been previously shown that the success of both individuals and families as a whole depends on the structure of social interactions among offspring."

"As any parent knows, parental care can be hard work and there is often a squeeze on the availability of resources in families. This sets the scene for conflicts of interest among family members over how these resources are allocated. Our study shows that the most successful families are those that are best at resolving these conflicts; parents and offspring that are most effective at responding to each other are the most successful."

Scientists from the University of Exeter's Centre for Ecology & Conservation worked with colleagues from the Universities of Basel and Bern in Switzerland and the French Universit? Paul Sabatier alongside French scientific research organisation CNRS. It was funded by the Natural Environment Research Council and the Swiss National Science Foundation.

63 broods of begging great tits breeding in nest boxes in woods around Bern in Switzerland were filmed when the nestlings were 10 days old, when both parents feed the young using different methods of selecting which nestlings receive food. The researchers examined the network of social interaction between the siblings, and then monitored the parents and their offspring to see whether they survived and went on to breed the following year.

Great tit mothers prefer to feed hungrier, smaller nestlings whereas fathers choose stronger, larger nestlings to feed. So in families where mothers provide most of the food, the young are more 'gregarious'. They moved around more and interacted more strongly with one another as the hungrier nestlings tried to move closer to their mothers to be fed. In broods where fathers fed more than mothers, nestlings moved around much less because the more competitive offspring took up the best positions near him.

Small and medium-sized broods fared better when the mother was the main feeder, whilst larger broods were more successful when the father provided most of the feeds. This could be because of constraints on space in larger families, making it harder for chicks to move around and jostle for position and easier to respond to fathers, with their simpler feeding rules, not mothers.

Dr Nick Royle concluded: "Users of Twitter will know that the more interactions they have, the more successful their profile is likely to be, and it's similar for nesting great tits; at least at nests where mothers provide most of the feeds. When fathers do most of the work offspring are much less gregarious. For young great tits social networking is related to the amount of physical contact each nestling has with their siblings, not the amount of tweeting they do. But using our social networks measure enabled us to demonstrate a novel link between how family members interact with one another and the success of those families."

"Our approach is not just applicable to social interactions in birds, however, or just for families. It could also be applied to understanding what patterns of social organisation best determine success between competing groups of humans, such as in business or team sports."

Video game with biofeedback teaches children to curb their anger

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Children with serious anger problems can be helped by a simple video game that hones their ability to regulate their emotions, finds a pilot study at Boston Children's Hospital. Results were published online October 24 in the journal Adolescent Psychiatry.

Noticing that children with anger control problems are often uninterested in psychotherapy, but very eager to play video games, Jason Kahn, PhD, and Joseph Gonzalez-Heydrich, MD, at Boston Children's Hospital developed "RAGE Control" to motivate children to practice emotional control skills that they can later use in challenging life situations.

The fast-paced game involves shooting at enemy spaceships while avoiding shooting at friendly ones. As children play, a monitor on one finger tracks their heart rate and displays it on the computer screen. When heart rate goes above a certain level, players lose their ability to shoot at the enemy spaceships. To improve their game, they must learn to keep calm.

"The connections between the brain's executive control centers and emotional centers are weak in people with severe anger problems," explains Gonzalez-Heydrich, chief of Psychopharmacology at Boston Children's and senior investigator on the study. "However, to succeed at RAGE Control, players have to learn to use these centers at the same time to score points."

The study, led by first author Peter Ducharme, MSW, a clinical social worker at Boston Children's, compared two groups of 9- to 17-year-old children admitted to the hospital's Psychiatry Inpatient Service who had high levels of anger. To qualify for the study, the children had to have a normal IQ and not need a medication change during the five-day study period.

One group, with 19 children, received standard treatments for anger including cognitive-behavioral therapy, presentation of relaxation techniques and social skills training for five consecutive business days. The second group, with 18 children, got these same treatments, but spent the last 15 minutes of their psychotherapy session playing RAGE Control.

After five sessions, the video gamers were significantly better at keeping their heart rate down. They showed clinically significant decreases in anger scores on the State Trait Anger Expression Inventory-Child and Adolescent (STAXI-CA), and specifically on:

  • the intensity of anger at a particular time
  • the frequency of angry feelings over time
  • expression of anger towards others or objects.

The gamers also had a decrease in suppressed, internalized anger that reached marginal statistical significance. In contrast, the standard-treatment group showed no significant change from baseline on any of the above measures.

The video gamers gave their therapy experience high marks for helpfulness (5 to 6 on a scale of 7). "Kids reported feeling better control of their emotions when encountering day to day frustrations on the unit," says Ducharme. "While this was a pilot study, and we weren't able to follow the kids after they were discharged, we think the game will help them control their emotions in other environments."

More studies in progress

The investigators are now conducting a randomized, controlled clinical trial of RAGE Control in the outpatient clinic at Boston Children's that adds a cooperative component. The children team up with a parent for 10 game sessions at the clinic; if either the parent's or the child's heart rate goes up, neither of them can shoot, forcing them to help calm each other. (Click here for more information.)

The research team plans another clinical trial to test whether letting children take RAGE Control home, to play with parents and siblings, will increase its effect.

In addition, Kahn is spearheading a team effort to develop toys to enhance emotional regulation skills in children too young for RAGE Control. These toys include racing cars that stop if a child gets too excited and, for even younger children, a cooperative game where children try to help each other stack blocks (if heart rate goes up, the table becomes wobbly and the blocks topple).

8 Preventive Health Care Services Women Can Get For Free 2 5 7

preventive health care services available free for women MonkeyBusiness Images/PhotoSpin

When a new provision of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), sometimes referred to as ?Obamacare? kicked in Aug. 1, 2012, about 47 million American women became eligible to receive additional preventative health care services without a co-payment or any patient cost sharing.

The eight free services are offered to privately insured women or Medicare recipients enrolling in new health insurance plans or renewing existing policies on or after Aug. 1, 2012.

ACA states any new private health plans obtained in plan years starting on or after Aug. 1, must cover the law?s guidelines on women?s preventive services with no cost sharing.

One big change is women can visit their OB/GYN physician without a referral. Insurance companies can no longer require a woman to obtain prior approval before seeking obstetrical and gynecological care.

Here?s a breakdown of the new services courtesy of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Well-woman Visits:

An annual well-woman preventative care visit for adult women to obtain the recommended preventive services, and any additional visits if women and their health care providers determine are necessary. These visits will help women and their health care providers determine what preventive services are appropriate, and set up an action plan to help women stay or get healthy.

HPV DNA Testing:

Women who are age 30 or older will have access to high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing every three years, regardless of their Pap smear results. Early screening, detection, and treatment have been shown to help reduce the prevalence of cervical cancer.

Gestational Diabetes Screening:

Women who are 24 to 28 weeks pregnant and those at high risk of developing gestational diabetes now have free access to this screening. It will help improve the health of mothers and babies because women who have gestational diabetes have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the future.

Apple Made No Mention Of iOS 6 Maps Today. Now That?s Boring.

Snapshot 10:23:12 10:03 AMSo now that we have our magical iPad Mini, which I must admit is pretty damn sexy, we listened to Tim Cook and Phil Schiller talk about all of the success that iOS 6 and the latest iPhone has had. But there was no mention of one of its core products, iOS Maps. Hmmm, I wonder why? Now, don't get me wrong, Cook responded in a great way to criticism of what I feel to be a half-baked attempt at making its Maps offering a better experience than what was available before iOS 6 with Google's embedded maps. In his statement about Maps last month, Cook said that Apple was hard at work:

Sensex gains 111 points as earnings improve sentiment

MUMBAI (Reuters) - The BSE Sensex rose on Monday after strong earnings from blue-chip companies such as Larsen & Toubro and Tata Consultancy Services improved the market sentiment, but Kingfisher Airlines slumped after the civil aviation authorities suspended its flying licence.

Gains in banking stocks such as ICICI Bank on expectations the RBI may cut the cash reserve ratio, or the amount of deposits lenders must keep with the RBI, at its policy review on October 30 also helped.

Although a cut in the repo rate is seen as less likely, with only nine out of 37 analysts predicting such an outcome in a Reuters poll out last week.

Action would remain stock specific as a slew of blue chip earnings will continue to dominate Indian stock markets, with Hero MotoCorp , IDFC and ICICI Bank set to post results this week.

"It's a decent earning season, better than expected overall. There are hardly any big disappointments except Infosys," said Jagannadham Thunuguntla, head of research at SMC Investment and Advisors Ltd.

The BSE Sensex rose 0.59 percent, or 111.13 points, to 18,793.44, rebounding from an earlier fall of as much as 0.44 percent.

The 50-share Nifty rose 0.58 percent, or 32.90 points, to 5,717.15.

Top construction and engineering company Larsen & Toubro ended 2.3 percent higher, after beating estimates with a 42.4 percent rise in net profit for the July-September quarter.

Tata Consultancy Services gained 2.3 percent after posting a 44 percent rise in quarterly profit late on Friday.

Shares in Indiabulls Financial Services rose 4 percent, after reporting higher-than-expected rise of 30.57 percent in its Sept quarter net profit.

Banks also advanced on hopes a cut in the CRR would improve margins given they do not earn interest on the deposits held by the central bank.

ICICI Bank gained 1.73 percent, recovering from a 0.7 percent fall on Friday, while HDFC Bank rose 1.67 percent.

However, among stocks that fell, public sector banks continued to disappoint markets by showing worse-than-expected asset quality.

Bank of Baroda shares fell 1.6 percent after the state-run bank posted a bigger-than-expected rise in non-performing assets in Sept quarter earnings.

Battery maker Exide Industries shares fell 4 percent, having already dropped 8.9 percent on Friday, after posting July-September profit that was well below expectations.

Shares in Kingfisher Airlines dropped 4.8 percent on Monday, after the civil aviation regulator cancelled its licence, forcing the the debt-laden carrier to stop bookings.

Bone marrow drive seeks donors - The Battalion - Texas A&M

The Texas A&M Cancer Society made a bold statement on Saturday in the fight against cancer before the A&M-LSU football game.

The American Childhood Cancer Organization and Future Aggie Nurses teamed up with the A&M cancer society to hold a bone marrow drive in Rudder Plaza from 7 to 11 a.m. with a goal of registering as many potential bone marrow donors as possible.

Christina Ruiz, senior molecular and cell biology major and president of Texas A&M Cancer Society, said 283 people registered to be a potential bone marrow donors, and the A&M cancer society received a few monetary donations.

?It was successful because every person that gets swabbed is a potential life saver,? Ruiz said. ?I wish I could thank every single person that got swabbed.?

The German Bone Marrow Donor Center, the largest bone marrow donor center in the world, provided the materials to swab potential donors and helped in the planning the event. The center is a non-profit organization that recruits volunteer bone marrow donors around the world. The people that are most in need of bone marrow transplants are people with leukemia, lymphoma and melanoma.

Amy Roseman, donor recruitment coordinator for the center, came in to help with the event and said it was great to see another drive put on at Texas A&M.

?Last spring A&M had 346 donors with seven potential donors,? Roseman said. ?That is statistically very good. The goal was to get even more life-saving Aggies from this drive?s donors.?

Volunteers ran the event, with 83 people helping. Each volunteer had to attend a training session to learn about the process in order to be able to answer any questions donors had. Volunteers walked around tailgates and Kyle Field to try to get people to donate.

Nikki Banneyer, sophomore psychology major and president of American Childhood Cancer Organization, said there is a negative stigma when people thinking of donating bone marrow.

?The stigma is inaccurate,? Banneyer said. ?About 80 to 85 percent of the time when an individual donates bone marrow, it is much like donating platelets. The remaining percentage is characterized by a needle having to extract the bone marrow from your hip bone but the pain is minimal, comparable to falling down.?

The groups that put on the event are hoping that the drive helps change the negative stigma that goes along with bone marrow transplants. Ruiz said she wants to stress that it is not as painful as everyone thinks.

?This is a 1-2 hour, outpatient, surgical procedure,? Ruiz said. ?Most compare the pain felt after the procedure to bruising a hip, which in perspective, is totally worth saving someone's life. It's a pain in the hip to save a life.?

Megan Girvan, sophomore environmental design major and member of the Texas A&M Cancer Society, said her membership, like many others, runs deeper than being involved in other organizations.

?My dad was diagnosed with lymphoma when he was nineteen,? Girvan said. ?His treatment involved cycles of radiation. Thankfully, he was able to be cancer free some time later. It?s hard to imagine going through that at the age I am. I joined cancer society to spread awareness and support those that are in similar situations.?

Money Monday: Save Money This Holiday Season With These ...

With two months left before Christmas, the last thing on many people?s minds is holiday shopping. But proactive planning can keep both your pocketbook and sanity intact.

Develop A Game Plan

Start by creating a list of the people for whom you?ll purchase gifts, then develop a tentative budget based on the list. Such a holiday shopping budget ensures that your gift spending doesn?t put the rest of your personal finances at peril.

And with nearly two months before Christmas you?ll even have time to put aside a sum of money each week to meet your budget goal. If your holiday budget is $800, for instance, start saving $100 a week to save enough money for your holiday shopping.

Take Advantage of New Retailer Price Matching Offers

Big box retailers have grown weary of shoppers using stores as showrooms to check out products they intend to purchase online. In response, several big box retailers recently announced they will match the prices of their major online competitors during the holiday season.

Target will run its price-matching guarantee between November 1 and December 16, matching the online prices of retailers like Amazon.com, BestBuy.com, and Walmart.com. Best Buy will also match prices found online for appliances and electronics.

Use these new price match policies to secure the best prices at some of your favorite bricks-and-mortars retailers.

Don?t Get Sucked Into Black Friday Mania

Think Black Friday will get you the best prices on holiday gifts? Think again. The day may be great for obtaining lower quality merchandise on the cheap, but according to Consumer Reports, shoppers do at least as well or better by waiting until after Black Friday for the lowest prices on quality merchandise.

Consumer Reports asked the price prediction website Decide.com to analyze the prices of some of Consumer Report?s best recommended products:

?In a significant proportion of cases, Decide.com data showed, the lowest prices of the season on those items were not on Black Friday or Cyber Monday, the day following the Thanksgiving weekend. Specifically, more than a quarter of the recommended TVs and cameras were at least 5 per cent cheaper between Cyber Monday and December 13 than they were earlier, including during the Black Friday weekend.?

Mark Your Calendar For Free Shipping Day

Shop online on Monday, December 17, 2012 and you?ll receive free shipping with delivery by Christmas Eve at over 1000 online retailers. Last year Free Shipping Day produced over $1 billion in online sales. To check out which online retailers are participating this year, visit FreeShippingDay.com.

Consider Discounted Gift Cards For Extra Holiday Savings

Save between 5% ? 30% simply by using discounted gift cards. Give them as gifts themselves or use them at retailers where you do your holiday shopping. Check out Giftcardrescue.com, Plasticjungle.com, or Giftcards.com for deals on gift cards from hundreds of merchants.

Take Advantage of Social Media

One of the surest ways to secure great discounts is by following your favorite retailers using social media. Simply by subscribing to your favorite merchant?s twitter feed or facebook page you?ll be eligible for exclusive coupons, deals, and other freebies. Lord and Taylor, for instance offered a facebook offer for 25% off almost everything in the store. Kohl?s offered a facebook coupon for 20% off of store merchandise.

By being smart and planning ahead you can save big bucks this holiday season.

BMWK, What are some of your best holiday shopping your secrets?

AMC Settles Dish Legal Battle in Time for 'Walking Dead'

Dish Network?s 14 million TV subscribers, who were no longer receiving AMC shows because of a legal battle, can stop groaning as loudly as zombies now. AMC Networks and Cablevision settled their dispute with Dish on Sunday, just in time for a new episode of AMC?s zombie drama The Walking Dead.

Dish had stopped broadcasting AMC programming on July 1 after public and heated carriage negotiations.

Sunday?s settlement reveals Dish will pay $700 million in cash for the distribution deal.

?We are glad to have settled the case and re-established our long-term relationships with AMC Networks and Cablevision,? Dave Shull, Dish?s senior vice president of programming, said in a statement. ?This multi-year deal delivers a fair value for both parties and includes digital expansion opportunities for AMC Networks? programming.?

An accompanying agreement had the AMC channel return Sunday, while other programming ? Sundance Channel, WE, IFC and Fuse ? will resume Nov. 1.

Meanwhile, AMC?s CEO and president Josh Sapan said, ?We are glad to partner again with Dish Network, and are delighted to bring back our popular channels and programming to their customers.?

Last week, AMC let Dish subscribers watch the season 3 premiere of The Walking Dead on the web.

The settlement ends the years-long litigation between Cablevision/AMC and Dish/Voom HD Holdings.

People immediately reacted to the settlement announcement on Twitter, with some spouting humor:

Rev Jackson says son going to Mayo for checkup

(AP) ? U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., who has given no hint of when he'll return to work four months after taking medical leave, will head back to the Mayo Clinic for a checkup "soon," his father, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, said Sunday.

The Democratic congressman from Illinois was released from the Rochester, Minn., clinic in September after seeking treatment for bipolar disorder and gastrointestinal issues. He has been with his family in Washington since, but has not appeared in public, campaigned beyond a recent robocall or said when he'll return to Capitol Hill. His spokesmen will only say that Jackson remains on the Nov. 6 ballot.

Jackson's father, a prominent civil rights leader, said the congressman will go back to Mayo in the near future, but would not say when or for how long. He said only doctors could determine if he would be able to return home immediately or receive further inpatient treatment.

"He has not regained his balance altogether," the elder Jackson said. "But he's seeking his balance."

He said his son has an "overwhelming desire to get back to work," but any predictions were premature.

Mayo Clinic spokeswoman Duska Anastasijevic said Jackson is not a current patient and she could not confirm whether he has plans to check into the clinic. Jackson spokesman Frank Watkins said he didn't have any further information.

Many questions about the congressman's medical leave have gone unanswered. He first took medical leave in June for what staff described as exhaustion, but the information wasn't disclosed publicly until two weeks later.

Since then, information has come in spurts. It took weeks for his office to say where and for what Jackson was being treated.

The timing of his leave also has invited scrutiny.

Jackson ? just weeks from the election ? remains under a House Ethics Committee investigation for links to imprisoned former Gov. Rod Blagojevich. The committee is looking into allegations that Jackson was involved in discussions about raising money for Blagojevich's campaign in exchange for an appointment to President Barack Obama's vacated U.S. Senate seat. And the announcement of the leave came just days after a former fundraiser connected to those allegations was arrested on unrelated federal medical fraud charges.

Jackson has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and has said his name will be cleared.

More recently, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that there is a federal probe related to his campaign finances.

The congressman, who first won office in 1995 special election, faces two little-known candidates on the November ballot. He's widely expected to be re-elected to a ninth full term despite the fact that he has not appeared in public for months. Jackson's Chicago-area district is heavily Democratic and many community leaders and mayors have endorsed him.

Jackson has said recently that he sees doctors twice a day while at the family's home in Washington. His wife, Chicago Alderman Sandi Jackson, has said that only doctors will be able to say when he can return to work.

The congressman's first communication to the public since the leave came Saturday in a robocall to voters in which he asked for patience.

"I am anxious to return to work on your behalf, but at this time it is against medical advice, and while I will always give my all to my constituents, I ask for your continued patience as I work to get my health back," he said in the recorded call.

His opponents ? a Republican college professor and postal worker running as an independent candidate ? blasted the move.

"As we wait for the Congressman to return, we have no voice. And now the Congressman is saying he has no answer about when he will return," Republican Brian Woodworth said in a statement late Saturday.
