Internet Business Smart ideas That Are Able To Provide Sizeable ...

Generating money from home on the web at present is not at all like it used to be. It truly is quite a bit harder to do and you also need to double the level of work you normally do as a way to make extra cash. The reason behind this is actually that there are definitely more people working at exactly the same thing as you plus more competition implies more division of prospective consumers. One will have to keep working harder than the other in order to get a larger group of consumers. Imagine accomplishing this together with thousands of you being competitive? If perhaps you desperately want to generate income online, it follows that you will need to enter into a few of the different types of Internet based bussiness that are able to offer you great income. An illustration of a exceptionally overloaded internet business is affiliate marketing online. Simply because this type of business is amongst the fastest ways to generate an income, many individuals have become affiliates. The reality is, you can?t actually count the quantity of online affiliate marketers today and every single day, thousands of others are currently subscribing to this type of web business.

In order to earn money online these days, it?s important to think about alternative kinds of online business that will give you a good amount of income. And so, listed here are a few online businesses you?re able to do as a way for you to make some money on the internet.

The first is by being a web-based FOREX or Stock dealer. As a consequence of the online world, it?s simple to trade stocks or currency in the comforts of your own home. Right now, for example, you are going to see lots of trading websites that cater to different types of traders from around the world.

If you feel that you are effective in the stock or FOREX market and therefore are proficient in it, therefore being an online stock or FOREX trader is the appropriate home business for you personally. Despite the fact that investing in stocks and FOREX has its risks, you must think about the belief that it has a lots of potential for making you some money. You can start with a very small amount of money in the beginning to see whether it is your cup of tea.

The great thing in relation to being an online trader is that you will be able to do it right in the comforts of your home. Just about all you need to have is a personal computer with an active internet connection, an active trading account which you could simply register in with different trading brokerage websites, and funds to trade.

A different type of online business that could assure revenue and a good amount of it is by being a call center agent. Most companies these days are actually outsourcing their call centers or their help desks. In actual fact, a few businesses actually outsource it to people that have computers with active connection to the internet in their homes. If you want to make some supplemental income however, you are not able to leave the house to work for some reason, then becoming an outsourced answering services company agent would be the best online job for you.

The great thing about this really is that you will not simply be able to take advantage of the convenience of doing work right in the comfort of your home, but you will also see that aside from a good income, a lot of companies may even compensate you for your internet connection. In this type of online business, what you need is a personal computer with an active internet connection along with a headset with microphone. The software program and instructions with regard to calls will just be given to you through the company you apply to. You also require very good communication competencies to ensure that you to be eligible for a this type of work in addition to being able to manage any kind of people. This will likely grow to be increasingly more of the norm in the near future because it is a relatively inexpensive means for companies to hire customer support or help desk representatives without having all of the regular overhead costs.

These are the things you must bear in mind concerning online firms. The mentioned jobs or online businesses are only two of the many new forms of income producing businesses from the internet. I anticipate that in years to come increasingly more service type businesses are going to be supplied by home business service providers.

Germans create physical iPhone 5 prototype based on design rumors (Digital Trends)

iphone-5-teaser1

We won?t know until Tuesday what Apple?s next iPhone will look like in real life, not officially, at least. But if the rumors or true, we might just have a sneak peek thanks to some highly motivated Germans. The gadget heads at Germany-based technology website Giga.de have created their own iPhone 5 prototype based on a variety of iPhone 5 rumors. That?s right, they made an actual iPhone 5 ? or at least something that might look just like one.

The Giga team created a computer mockup based upon ?CAD designs, hardware components, several leaked hints, cases and recent, believable mockups,? according to a post on the sit. Their device was made using the same process that?s used to create the iPad, they say, which includes machining the rounded-edge back plate from a solid block of aluminum, which they later treated with glass pearls to give it ?the same slightly rough touch? as the iPad.

Just as the rumors dictate, the iPhone 5 mock-up is slightly wider (59.94 mm vs 58.66 mm) and slightly shorter (109.98 mm vs 115.2 mm) than the iPhone 4. It also has the tapered ?tear drop? shape we?ve been hearing so much about, with a 6.86 mm thickness at the top, going down to 5.33 mm at the bottom. The new shape gives the iPhone 5 prototype a screen size of about 4 inches, as opposed to the 3.5-inch display of the iPhone 4.

Also included in the iPhone 5 mockup is a newly-designed home button, which isn?t really a ?button? at all. Instead, the Giga crew replaced it with an elongated space that could, theoretically, function as a touchpad that functions similarly to the touchscreen ? a detail some say the iPhone 5 will have. The phone does lack a camera and LED flash because little has been said about the form these will take, though we are nearly certain the camera will have an 8-megapixel sensor.

Of course, the mockup doesn?t actually work ? so there?s little chance Apple will come after them for patent infringement, or any other such nonsense. But this does give us a very good idea of what Apple will unveil at its event on Tuesday ? you know, if the rumors are true.

If this is what the iPhone 5 will look like, would you buy one?

Mainstream Media Spins Real Estate Recovery | Greg Hunter's ...

By Greg Hunter?s USAWatchdog.com

Just about everywhere you turned yesterday, the mainstream media (MSM) was talking up the good news in the?latest Case-Shiller Home Price Index report.? For example, the online version of USA Today had a headline that read ?Spring buying boosts home prices, market still sluggish.?? The first line of the story said, ?Prices rose 0.9% in July over June, marking the fourth-consecutive month of increases for the Standard & Poor?s Case-Shiller index released Tuesday.?? But, buried in the same story was this little piece of information, ?When adjusted for seasonal factors, home prices were essentially flat in July over June, S&P?s data show.? ?The housing market is still bottoming and has not turned around,? says David Blitzer, chairman of the index committee at S&P.? July home prices were down 4.1% year over year, according to S&P?s index of 20 leading cities. Minneapolis and Phoenix led the declines, with prices in those areas down about 9% year-over-year.?? (Click here for the complete USA Today article.)?

What a spin job! ??Prices were essentially flat,? and ?July home prices were down 4.1% year over year.?? Shouldn?t the headline have read something like ?Home Prices Decline year over year? Flat for July??? ?Why does the MSM try to spin good news out of a?rotten situation?? Why do they think it is their duty to make a story?look better than reality?? I was in the MSM for most of my career, and I know what?its duty should be.? Give it to the viewer or reader straight.? There is not a single inaccuracy in the USA Today story, but the spin and omissions are stupefying.? Would you like an example of what I am talking about?? Sure you would.??

USA Today and many other news outlets such as CNBC and Fox were touting a little talking point from the report that said, ?. . . 17 of 20 cities in the Case-Shiller index showed unadjusted increases in July over June. . .?? This would make you think Wow! ?We must have a turnaround in real estate going on.? The talking point should have been, year over year, 18 out of 20 cities had price declines!? The two cities that had price increases, Detroit and Washington, were only up 1.2% and .3%!!!? Who cares about monthly numbers?? It is the year over year numbers that matter most!!!!!? This report was spun to make a very bad market look like it was improving.? It is not improving!? It is an unfolding?disaster, and that is a statistical fact straight from the report!!?

Real estate attorney Adam Leitman Bailey dropped a real stink bomb on CNBC yesterday when he was talking about the enormous backlog of foreclosures.? He said, ?That?s going to take prices down to a really low level . . . I see this as a huge problem lasting at least 5 years.?? Mr. Baily went on to say, ?I think we?re going to have to understand that we may not have appreciation on equity in their homes for the next 30 years.? And it?s really a big statement, and I know that, but so many people are underwater that they may not be able to recover unless they have cash.?? One of the cheerleading talking heads on CNBC closed the interview by saying, ?Depressingly, thank you very much.?? Why is it ?depressing? to know the truth?

Mr. Leitman said the foreclosure crisis will be around for ?at least 5 years.?? To me, that puts the bottom at around 2016.? ?That is the same real estate bottom date an expert predicted in a story I did in July.? The post was titled ?The Only Thing You Can Count On.?? (Click here to read it.)???

Besides foreclosures, I think there will be another big drag on real estate? interest rates.? Right now, the Fed is suppressing interest rates.? The latest Fed move (the so-called ?twist?) has forced interest rates on mortgages even lower.? Right now, a home buyer can get a 30-year mortgage for around 4% and maybe less.? When the suppression game ends, real estate prices will take another cliff dive.? What do you think will happen to home prices if mortgage rates go to 8% for a 30 year loan?? Prices will tumble or, at the very least, stagnate for years.? The real estate market is not coming out of the tank anytime soon? no matter how the MSM spins it.

Saudi court: Flog woman for driving car

A Saudi woman was sentenced Tuesday to be lashed 10 times with a whip for defying the kingdom's prohibition on female drivers, the first time a legal punishment has been handed down for a violation of the longtime ban in the ultraconservative Muslim nation.

Normally, police just stop female drivers, question them and let them go after they sign a pledge not to drive again. But dozens of women have continued to take to the roads since June in a campaign to break the taboo.

Story: Saudi king: Women will be able to vote in municipal elections

Making Tuesday's sentence all the more upsetting to activists is that it came just two days after King Abdullah promised to protect women's rights and decreed that women would be allowed to participate in municipal elections in 2015. Abdullah also promised to appoint women to a currently all-male advisory body known as the Shura Council.

    6. Long-term jobless face issue with references

The mixed signals highlight the challenge for Abdullah, known as a reformer, in pushing gently for change without antagonizing the powerful clergy and a conservative segment of the population.

Retaliation?
Abdullah said he had the backing of the official clerical council. But activists saw Tuesday's sentencing as a retaliation of sorts from the hard-line Saudi religious establishment that controls the courts and oversees the intrusive religious police.

"Our king doesn't deserve that," said Sohila Zein el-Abydeen, a prominent female member of the governmental National Society for Human Rights. She burst into tears in a phone interview and said, "The verdict is shocking to me, but we were expecting this kind of reaction."

The driver, Shaima Jastaina, in her 30s, was found guilty of driving without permission, activist Samar Badawi said. The punishment is usually carried out within a month. It was not possible to reach Jastaina, but Badawi, in touch with Jastaina's family, said she appealed the verdict.

Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world that bans women ? both Saudi and foreign ? from driving. The prohibition forces families to hire live-in drivers, and those who cannot afford the $300 to $400 a month for a driver must rely on male relatives to drive them to work, school, shopping or the doctor.

There are no written laws that restrict women from driving. Rather, the ban is rooted in conservative traditions and religious views that hold giving freedom of movement to women would make them vulnerable to sins.

Activists say the religious justification is irrelevant.

"How come women get flogged for driving while the maximum penalty for a traffic violation is a fine, not lashes?" Zein el-Abydeen said. "Even the Prophet (Muhammad's) wives were riding camels and horses because these were the only means of transportation."

Campaign to break taboo
Since June, dozens of women have led a campaign to try to break the taboo and impose a new status quo. The campaign's founder, Manal al-Sherif, who posted a video of herself driving on Facebook, was detained for more than 10 days. She was released after signing a pledge not to drive or speak to media.

Since then, women have been appearing in the streets driving their cars once or twice a week.

Until Tuesday, none had been sentenced by the courts. But recently, several women have been summoned for questioning by the prosecutor general and referred to trial.

One of them, housewife Najalaa al-Harriri, drove only two times, not out of defiance, but out of need, she says.

"I don't have a driver. I needed to drop my son off at school and pick up my daughter from work," she said over the phone from the western port city of Jeddah.

"The day the king gave his speech, I was sitting at the prosecutor's office and was asked why I needed to drive, how many times I drove and where," she said. She is to stand trial in a month.

After the king's announcement about voting rights for women, Saudi Arabia's Grand Mufti Abdel Aziz Al Sheik blessed the move and said, "It's for women's good."

Al-Harriri, who is one of the founders of a women's rights campaign called "My Right My Dignity," said, "It is strange that I was questioned at a time the mufti himself blessed the king's move."

Asked if the sentencing will stop women from driving, Maha al-Qahtani, another female activist, said, "This is our right, whether they like it or not."

Tracing an elusive killer parasite in Peru

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2011) ? Despite what Hollywood would have you believe, not all epidemics involve people suffering from zombie-like symptoms--some can only be uncovered through door-to-door epidemiology and advanced mathematics.

Michael Levy, PhD, assistant professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, along with other collaborators from Penn, Johns Hopkins University, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Peru, are in the trenches combining tried-and-true epidemiological approaches with new statistical methods to learn more about the course of a dangerous, contagious disease epidemic. Their research was published recently in PLoS Computational Biology.

Chagas disease, primarily seen in South America, Central America, and Mexico, is the most deadly parasitic disease in the Americas. Caused by the protozoan parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, it is spread chiefly via several species of blood-sucking triatomine insects. After an initial acute phase, the disease continues to lurk in the body and can eventually cause a variety of chronic life-threatening problems, particularly in the heart. Although there are some drugs to treat Chagas disease, they become less effective the longer a person is infected. The lack of a vaccine also means that the only effective way to control the disease is to control the disease vectors.

Because the chronic effects of Chagas disease can take decades to manifest themselves, tracking the development and progression of epidemics has been a challenging problem. In the past, Chagas disease was known mostly in rural regions, but has been spreading into more urbanized areas over the last 40 years. Levy's team has been focusing on one of those areas in the city of Arequipa, Peru.

"There is an assumption that Chagas disease is not a problem in Peru because statistics don't show that more people are dying of cardiac disease in the areas with Chagas transmission compared to the rest of the country," Levy said. "What we've shown calls into question the assumption that the particular parasite that's circulating in Arequipa is somehow less virulent. We show that there's really nothing to back that assumption."

Epicenter Regression

The researchers used epicenter regression, which takes a statistical "snapshot" of disease infection in a particular population to track the history of how an infection takes hold and spreads. Epicenter regression considers the duration of an individual's exposure to infection as a function of distance from their home to an unknown site, or sites, where disease has been introduced, and combines that measure with other known risks to estimate the probability of infection. From this data, the course of infection can be traced backward to infer where and when a disease first struck a community.

Levy's team has been collecting data in Peru since 2004. "We do all the fieldwork, we gather all our data, which is very much door-to-door, old-fashioned epidemiology," said Levy. That involves both entering households to search for infected insects and collecting blood samples from residents. The team's survey work led to the observation of spatial clusters of parasites in insects such that "it looked like there were isolated clusters of transmission, or 'micro-epidemics.' It was really observation, then hypothesis, then testing."

According to their findings, the Chagas parasite was introduced into the region about twenty years ago, and most infections occurred over the last ten years. Spread of the disease is being disrupted in Arequipa through insecticide application, but up to 5 percent of the population was infected before their houses were sprayed with insecticide. Levy and his colleagues conclude that the lack of chronic disease symptoms among these infected individuals could be due to the relatively short time of transmission: Most individuals may have yet to pass from the long asymptomatic period to symptomatic Chagas disease.

Inevitable Increase

The finding has crucial implications for the future management of the disease. Because the lack of late-stage Chagas disease in Arequipa is not an indication of a weakened parasite, the researchers believe that preparations should be made for a potential increase in chronic Chagas cases in coming years. As they have throughout their research, Levy's team is working in close collaboration with the Peruvian government to ensure that the warning provided by their work does not go unheeded. "Everything we do in Arequipa is with the local Ministry of Health," Levy said. "We're very much integrated with the government's Chagas disease control program. We started diagnosing people who are asymptomatic and the Ministry of Health is treating the individuals who are diagnosed to increase the probability they don't progress to later-stage disease."

Levy and his collaborators, including Eleazar Cordova-Benzaquen and Cesar Naquira in Peru, plan to expand their epicenter regression modeling techniques to study other infectious diseases, including the West Nile virus in New York City. The method can even be applied to fighting the spread of pesky insects such as bedbugs. "We're trying to work in parallel to improve control of Chagas vectors and bedbugs," he noted. "The idea is if you find a house with bedbugs, where do you go next? Same thing with the Chagas bugs. When they come back after the insecticide campaigns, you get a report and you have to figure out how to react to those reports, which are pretty scattered." Levy and his team have found a way to find patterns, and thus more predictability, in the chaos of infectious disease transmission.

This work was funded by the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Let?s go bowling

September 26th, 2011, 8:07 pm ? Post a Comment ? posted by Jimmy Graben

We?re not even halfway through the regular season, but I guess it?s not TOO early to be looking at bowl projections.

CIF will select schools from Northern California to participate in its annual bowl games in December and there are a couple Mid-Valley schools in the running.

Go figure, it?s the two of the area?s biggest rivals.

Sutter (4-0) is currently ranked No. 10 in the Division III bowl division and Wheatland (4-0) is listed in the ?Others to Watch? category.

The only Northern Section school to ever earn a state bowl bid was Hamilton in 2008. Only one way to describe that game ? ouch.

Wheatland can help its own cause when the Pirates host Colfax on Friday night for homecoming.

Colfax (4-0) is ranked fifth in Division III and fresh off a 48-40 victory over Division-I Davis. The Falcons are the Sac Bee?s No. 18 team in the latest poll.

If the Huskies or Pirates hope to even have a shot at State, they will have to go undefeated and win the section championship. Even that won?t guarantee anything.

Both teams are probably just focusing on Friday night right now. No need to look too far ahead right? That?s what I?m here for.

Wheatland senior Tyler Larcom will need to continue his hot streak if Wheatland hopes to stay in Friday?s game.

He has three straight 200-yard rushing games with at least two TDs. His predecessor, A-D Offensive MVP Derick Seward, had two 200-yard games all last season.

Check out some of Larcom?s highlights this season. (He?s No. 21)

Longtime fugitive US hijacker caught in Portugal (AP)

NEWARK, N.J. ? A 1970s militant who escaped from a murder sentence in New Jersey and carried out one of the most brazen hijackings in U.S. history was captured in Portugal after more than 40 years as a fugitive, authorities said Tuesday. After decades of stagnancy, there was a sudden break in the case when police matched his fingerprint to a resident ID card.

George Wright, 68, was arrested Monday by Portuguese authorities in a town near Lisbon at the request of the U.S. government, said a member of the fugitive task force that had been searching for him for nearly a decade.

Wright was convicted of the 1962 murder of a gas station owner in Wall, N.J. Authorities say Wright and three associates had already committed multiple armed robberies on Nov. 23, 1962, when he and another man shot and killed Walter Patterson, a decorated World War II veteran and father of two, during a robbery of the Collingswood Esso gas station in Wall.

Wright received a 15- to 30-year sentence and had served eight years when he and three other men escaped from the Bayside State Prison farm in Leesburg, N.J., on Aug. 19, 1970.

The FBI said Wright then became affiliated with an underground militant group, the Black Liberation Army, and lived in a "communal family" with several of its members in Detroit.

On July 31, 1972, Wright, dressed as a priest and using the alias the Rev. L. Burgess, hijacked a Delta Air Lines flight from Detroit to Miami accompanied by three men, two men and three small children from his communal group, including Wright's companion and their 2-year-old daughter, according to Associated Press reports at the time.

When the plane landed at the Miami airport, the hijackers demanded a $1 million ransom ? the highest of its kind at the time ? to free the 86 people on board. After an FBI agent delivered a 70-pound satchel full of money ? wearing only a pair of swim trunks, per the hijacker's instructions ? the passengers were released, according to AP accounts.

The hijackers then forced the plane to Boston, where an international navigator was taken aboard, and the group flew on to Algeria, where the hijackers sought asylum.

The group was taken in by Eldridge Cleaver, the American writer and activist, who had been permitted by Algeria's Socialist government to open an office of the Black Panther Movement in that country in 1970, after the Algerian president at the time professed sympathy for what he viewed as worldwide liberation struggles.

Algerian officials returned the plane and the money to the U.S. at the request of the American government, and briefly detained the hijackers before letting them stay. Coverage of the hijackers' stay in Algeria said their movements were restricted, and the president ignored their calls for asylum and requests to return them the ransom money.

The group eventually made its way to France, where Wright's associates were tracked down, arrested, tried and convicted in Paris in 1976. France refused to extradite them to the U.S., where they would have faced far longer prison sentences. According to news reports at the time, the defense hailed the light sentences they were given as "a condemnation of American racism" after the jury found "extenuating circumstances" in their actions, apparently agreeing with the defense's assertion that the hijacking had been motivated by "racial oppression in the United States."

But Wright remained at large, and his case was among the top priorities when the New York-New Jersey Fugitive Task Force was formed in 2002, according to Michael Schroeder, a spokesman for the U.S. Marshals Service, who worked with New Jersey's FBI and other agencies on the task force.

The Department of Corrections brought along all its old escape cases nine years ago when the task force began operating, Schroeder said, and investigators started the case anew, never taking a prolonged break from working on it for the past nine years.

They looked at reports from the 1970s, interviewed Wright's victims and the pilots of the plane he hijacked. They had age-enhanced sketches made and tried to track down any communications he may have made with family in the U.S.

The address in Portugal was one of several on a list of places they wanted to check out. But Schroeder said there was nothing about it that made it seem especially promising. "It was another box to get checked, so to speak," he said.

That changed last week, when details started falling into place with the help of authorities there.

"They have a national ID registry," Schroeder said. "They pulled that. That confirmed his print matched the prints with the DOC. The sketch matched the picture on his ID card."

By the weekend, U.S. authorities were on a plane to Portugal. And Monday, Portuguese police staking out his home found him.

Schroeder said he has not been told what, if anything, Wright said when he was caught.

Wright made an initial court appearance in Portugal on Tuesday, according to Justice Department Spokeswoman Laura Sweeney. He was arrested for purposes of extradition on the state of New Jersey's homicide charge, and would serve the remainder of his sentence on that charge if returned to the U.S.

Nyad resumes swim after jellyfish sting (Reuters)

MIAMI (Reuters) ? Long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad resumed her bid on Sunday to become the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida, returning to the water after being stung in the face and eyes, presumably by a jellyfish, her team said.

"She's back in! At 12:20am ET, Diana has re-entered the water," according to a posting on her Twitter account.

Nyad, 62, was treated by doctors on the specially equipped boat accompanying her after she was stung on Saturday night.

She had departed from the Cuban capital, Havana, on Friday evening on her quest to make the 103-mile (166-km) crossing through shark-infested waters, a grueling swim that had been expected to last about 60 hours.

According to a posting before Nyad got back in the water, an independent observer from the International Swim Federation said she could continue the swim if she had only been removed from the water for medical treatment.

"The swim then becomes something called a 'staged swim,' meaning that it may occur in stages," the post said, adding it would still be record-breaking if she resumed the effort.

It is the second time in two months Nyad has attempted the swim. In August, she swam for 29 hours and about 50 miles before abandoning the effort. She said she suffered from asthma for 11 hours of the swim, which drained her strength.

Nyad was swimming "stronger and stronger," a message said earlier in the day, after her pace slowed overnight when she suffered a series of stings from jellyfish-like Portuguese Man o'War and complained of breathing problems.

Stings on her arms, the side of her body and face forced her to tread water for more than an hour. She eventually changed her bathing suit and put on a shirt to cover herself.

Under rules for the record swim attempt, Nyad can stop each hour to take liquids and high-energy food but cannot touch the boat accompanying her. A team of about 30 people is keeping watch over her as she swims.

FIRST ATTEMPTED CROSSING IN 1978

Even though she retired from competitive swimming years ago, Nyad has said she is trying the swim to help people her age and older realize they can still do many things. She said the swim was also an effort to improve U.S.-Cuba relations.

Nyad, who was raised in south Florida, first attempted the crossing from Cuba in 1978 when, at the age of 28, she was at the peak of her career as a marathon swimmer. Heavy seas forced her to give up before reaching Florida.

She has set several world records, including swimming around New York's Manhattan island in 1975 in less than eight hours and completing a 102.5-mile (165-km) swim from Bimini in the Bahamas to Florida in 1979.

The Florida Straits crossing was completed successfully in May 1997 by Australian Susan Maroney, then 22, but she swam in a cage to protect her from sharks.

Nyad is being protected in the warm waters by an anti-shark device that uses a mild electrical current to shield her from the predators.

Dallas Cowboys College Football Viewing Guide - 9/24/11

Are the Cowboys scouting Southern California safety T.J. McDonald today?

It's going to be a busy weekend for the Dallas Cowboys scouts, as they visit no less than five games today.

Chris Steuber regularly tweets which NFL Scouts officially visit which college games. He confirms that Cowboys scouts will attend at least these five games over the weekend:

  • Louisiana-Monroe at Iowa, Saturday, 12:00 pm (ET)
  • No. 7 Oklahoma State at No. 8 Texas A&M, Saturday, 3:30 pm (ET)
  • UCLA at Oregon State, Saturday, 3:30 pm (ET)
  • No. 10 Oregon at Arizona, 10:15 pm (ET)
  • No. 23 USC at Arizona State, 10:15 pm (ET)

As tempting as it would be to think the Cowboys are attending the Oklahoma State game because they have their eyes set on WR Justin Blackmon, the reality is that the Cowboys are likely to be looking at defensive help in the draft this year.

It doesn't come as a big surprise that the Cowboys are attending games that feature nation's no. 1 and no. 2 ranked free safeties in USC's T.J. McDonald and Oklahoma State's Markelle Martin. CBSSports.com has these players ranked as the top prospects at their positions. After the break, we use CBSsports 2012 draft prospects rankings to figure out who else the Cowboys may be looking at in the games the Cowboys scouts are attending.

Star-divide

Using the CBSsports rankings, and eliminating all offensive players, leads to an interesting observation: Of the top eight defensive prospects the Cowboys could be looking at in today's games, seven are defensive backs. Only one is a linebacker, and I'm not sure he fits the RKG profile the Cowboys are looking for.

Possible Cowboys scouting candidates (click column header to sort)

Proj. Round Player Pos. Overall Rank Pos. Rank School Wt. Ht. 40 time
1-2 *T.J. McDonald FS 32 1 Southern California 205 6-2 4.54
1-2 *Cliff Harris CB 41 7 Oregon 168 5-11 4.49
1-2 *Vontaze Burfict ILB 45 5 Arizona State 250 6-3 4.67
2 Markelle Martin FS 46 2 Oklahoma State 198 6-1 4.47
2 Coryell Judie CB 49 8 Texas A&M 190 5-11 4.48
3-4 Tony Dye SS 103 3 UCLA 216 5-11 4.52
4 Shaun Prater CB 112 13 Iowa 185 5-10 4.49
4 Omar Bolden** CB 113 14 Arizona State 195 5-10 4.49

All data: cbssports.com, * Junior, ** out with torn ACL suffered in spring training

So if this list is anything to go by, watch the defensive backs carefully as you watch the college games today. One of those guys may be a future Cowboy.

Feel free to contribute players I may have missed.

NASA: Satellite Debris Probably Hit Pacific, But Room For Doubt

An earlier report that debris from the recently deorbited UARS satellite had landed in Canada may have been premature. Apparently, the picture of when (and therefore where) the satellite deorbited is back to being clear as mud. Most likely, says NASA, the debris will never be found, but is thought to have landed in the Pacific Ocean. If you're an optimist interested in finding your very own piece of space debris, though, you might be interested in this map based on various re-entry scenarios (hat tip to Robert Woodcock); in the U.S., the Northwest is your best bet.

Innovation Excellence | Business Innovation Factory (BIF-7) ? Day ...

Business Innovation Factory (BIF-7) - Day One RecapFor those of you waiting a recap of BIF-7 with eager anticipation and jealous longing, I can confirm that once again the folks at BIF have pulled together another excellent conference. Herewith, a few ideas, random thoughts, and synopsis of the first day.

First, a brief aside. I somehow missed the email (Tweet, document?) that circulated that demands that every speaker present a serio-comedic picture of himself or herself taken in the late 50s or early 60s. Did that memo go out? Because I think even the young mountain climber who could barely be out of middle school opened with a picture of himself in black and white taken on a Brownie in the early 60s. Just kidding Matt.

BIF, for those of you unindoctrinated, is the Business Innovation Factory, and each year BIF hosts a conference that is part TED talk, part innovation conference, with a significant portion of meeting interesting people involved in a wide range of innovation efforts. So the topics are interesting, the people are interested and the conversations are relatively deep and always enlightening

We had talks today from a wide array of speakers, including college professors, mountain climbers, the lead innovator at WD-40 and a gentleman who is the innovation lead at Willow Creek. Yes, BIF folks cast their nets wide and brought in quite a haul of innovators from a range of industries and focuses (foci?).

There were a couple of statements that I thought resonated nicely. For example, a photographer who spoke complained that many people wanted to know what camera she used. Her response ? it?s not the camera, it?s the photographer and the vision. That resonates with me because far too often corporations trust innovation tools rather than the people, their ideas and their vision.

A community leader from Houston picked at an issue that resonates with me. Her argument is that we often look at downtrodden communities and talk about what?s ?wrong? rather than what?s working. Her statement ?you can build on broken? ? you build on what works. Rather than sit around and talk about why ideas won?t work, build on the people and capabilities that will work, and do work.

Angus Davis, who is a successful serial entrepreneur, left us with this phrase that sits just beside the door as people exit his office ? ?Let?s make better mistakes tomorrow?. The connotation that innovation, and advancement in general for that matter, requires learning, which will result in failures and successes. Hopefully we are all learning and making better mistakes each day.

John Hagel from Deloitte?s Center for the Edge suggested that in corporations we?ve lost our risk-taking and exploratory mindset. Entrepreneurs and innovators have this by definition, but as firms grow larger they grow more risk adverse and more comfortable, defending markets and position rather than exploring new ones.

Perhaps the most provocative talk was from Dale Stephens who is a Thiel Fellow. Dale dropped out of college when he realized that academia is increasingly not a place to exchange ideas as it is to memorize and regurgitate information. I paraphrased his speech as ?they pretend to teach us and we pretend to learn?. While I don?t agree with all of Dale?s arguments about the value of a college education, or lack thereof, his voice is one of many that argue that academia needs innovation desperately.

Why are these folks chosen as speakers at an innovation conference? Because they create and sustain meaningful ideas that challenge what is comfortable and routine for many of us and encourage us to think differently. I look forward to seeing what is presented on Wednesday.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] -- Bisphenol A (BPA), a common component of plastic used in many consumer products, has recently become infamous -- and banned in some places -- because it can mimic natural estrogen in the body. A new study by Brown University toxicologists, however, finds that male mice whose mothers were exposed even to high doses of BPA while pregnant developed no signs of harm to their testes as adults.

"This might alleviate some worries for the general public," said Mary Hixon, assistant professor (research) of pathology and laboratory medicine in the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and the paper's senior author. "It comes down to the biology."

The research, funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health, appears in advance online in the journal Birth Defects Research (Part B).

In the study, a team led by Hixon and lead author Jessica LaRocca, a graduate student, exposed mice to BPA during days 10 through 16 of their pregnancy, the period of time when the sexual organs of their fetuses were developing.

Some pregnant mice consumed a solution with a concentration of BPA at the EPA-acceptable level, and other pregnant mice were given a solution at a concentration 20 times higher. The experimenters' negative controls were given sesame oil, and the positive controls were given diethylstilbestrol (DES), a much more potent estrogen mimicking chemical.

The researchers then studied the litter size and viability of each mother's pups and later studied several characteristics of the reproductive organs of their adult sons.

What they found is that by every measure at either dose level, the BPA did no apparent harm. The litter sizes of BPA-exposed mothers were not affected compared to the negative control, both at birth and at weaning. In the adult male mice, testis weight, body weight, and seminal vesicle weight were no different. The seminiferous tubules, sperm counts, and testosterone levels of BPA-exposed mice were also not significantly different. The mice exposed to the chemical also did not show any abnormal amount of cell death among cells that make sperm or in the levels of mRNA associated with testis maturation.

LaRocca and Hixon hypothesize that the mothers and their growing sons are able to detoxify much of the BPA via their metabolism, an important reason to test BPA exposure via the digestive system, the most common route of exposure to humans. BPA, which has been used in baby bottles and to line soda cans, leaches into the liquids people drink.

"So while the [mother] has the dose of 50 micrograms per kilogram, by the time it reaches the fetus that dose is much, much lower than if you were to inject the animal," LaRocca said.

"Humans are not going to get the exposure the animals were exposed to," Hixon added.

But by this ingestion method the researchers did find several negative effects of exposure to DES, a synthetic estrogen prescribed from the late 1930s to the early 1970s in hopes of preventing pregnancy complications. In the mice, DES significantly reduced litter size and steroidogenesis mRNA expression.

    And the females?

Hixon and LaRocca cautioned that while their study may offer some encouragement for male reproductive health to the extent it can be extrapolated from mice to men, it does not mean that BPA is harmless.

Hixon noted that the research team did not test whether the sperm of BPA-exposed mice were actually fertile.

More concerning is their data on the reproductive development of the female mouse pups born in the study. Although that analysis is more preliminary and still unpublished, it shows signs of lasting negative effects of BPA exposure in their mammary glands and ovaries.

In addition to Hixon and LaRocca, other authors on the paper include Alanna Boyajian, Caitlin Brown, and Stuart Duncan Smith.
