Pathway Family Services, Inc. (PFS) is pleased to announce Edward F. Malewski, M.D. as its new medical director for the Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF) in Topeka, Ks. Dr. Malewski brings more than 35 years of vast experience in both residential and commercial settings. His leadership role in mental health for children, adolescents and families promotes high quality, broad-ranged and integrated services that help to bridge the gap between child mental health, educational services, child welfare and the juvenile justice system.
The PRTF program provides intensive and active residential treatment 24 hours a day, seven days a week for children ages 6 and older who are in need of psychiatric care for mental or emotional trauma. The program aims to return the child successfully to his or her family or a less restrictive community living situation so they can get back on track with life.
Dr. Malewski is responsible for each child?s care during their stay at the PRTF. Upon arrival, he does a thorough diagnostic evaluation, reviews medical records, follows up with each child through regular sessions, and coordinates with medical, clinical and program staff on the implementation of each child?s individualized plan of care. Dr. Malewski also coordinates with therapists, case managers, teaching staff, facility staff, community agencies and families of the child to keep them informed and knowledgeable about the issues the child is facing.
?Dr. Malewski brings with him many years of skilled experience in psychiatric residential care for children to our organization,? said Kameron Labahn-Patrick, Director, PFS Operations. ?Pathway Family Services is extremely proud to have Dr. Malewski join our team of professionals and further improve our system of care, to which his knowledge will greatly contribute to the lives of children suffering from severe mental illness and their families.?
Dr. Malewski has previously worked as a child and adolescent psychiatrist, medical director, psychiatric physician, and child/adolescent acute inpatient unit director, among various other positions. He also taught as an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of California-Davis and at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine, and boasts numerous presentations and publications in print.?
Dr. Malewski is certified as a diplomat for the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He received his undergraduate degree in chemistry and his master?s degree in pathology and biochemistry from the University of Missouri Columbia. He completed his medical program and doctoral degree at the University of Missouri in May 1973. In his spare time, Dr. Malewski enjoys music, exercise, writing and travel.
